I am greatly considering getting a Gear VR headset as a gateway to VR, but I do realize all of Oculus's products are closed source. It's useless to me if I can't install applications not on the Oculus Home store. Is it easy to use open applications on Gear VR?

Yes. SideloadVR is easy to use, and you can also download an app that blocks the Oculus process and run Cardboard apps.

Would you say the open source community support of Gear VR is worth it enough to purchase one?
So how is the experience of these phone-based VR platforms? I recently got a Vive and was wondering how they compare.

I have no idea desu. There doesn't seem to be that much on sideload, though. Haven't really messed around with the cardboard stuff.
The porn is great though.
I'd wait a bit until the technology improves. Where it is as of now it is not worth the hundreds of dollars

That was one of the main reasons I was asking. Can you name names for porn applications to point me in the right direction?

Well the big thing they're all missing is obviously positional tracking. You gotta keep your body still and even then the head neck model doesn't always fit exactly right.
Also the resolution is kinda low, so distant detail is hard to make out, and by distant I mean the other side of the room.

I just use milkvr. But virtualrealplayer, on Sideload, is supposed to work well too.
>adults need to see their videogames a couple of inches away of their eyes in a little screen
And then people complaint about ADHD...

>watching VR porn
>switch to 3D
>it's blurry as shit

I don't think streaming really works right now
>>342541301
So they employ a head/neck model like the DK1 to fudge the lack of proper tracking? Interesting.
>>342542528
VR porn sucks currently, it's all made for cardboard or maybe gearVR so the resolution is shit

Looks pretty good actually.

People are just trying to make money off of this first step into better technology. Yeah it'll probably slow down progress of developing past it, but thats just the way the world works
