Here's my plan to deal with the triple notes. I'm not sure how effective it's going to be. I have R1=left+up and R2=X+O. When I see a triple note, I'll check if there are more arrows or shapes, press the corresponding R button, and press the one other necessary face button on the other side of the controller.

I think I've only ever hit one triple note, and that was just pure guesswork. I don't have as much issue now with double notes because they usually have a pattern to them. Quadruple has always been easy so long as my finger doesn't slip.
