Part of the reason why he's so remembered is because Char's smooth as fuck voice and charisma made him a compelling character unlike any villain/rival seen before him in the late 70s. Shuichi Ikeda is part of the reason why Char is still one of the (if not the) most well recognized Gundam characters, and why he still gets work almost 40 years later.

The story and characters are fine and because it's a 70 hour game most people get attached to them. It's not about dating girls, it's more about finding people all over town with interesting stories and progressing your relationship to power up your "Stands" and dungeon crawl/fight bosses.
There's not much in the actual school besides answering some test questions and finding stuff to do after class.
It's up to you which one to start with; Persona 4 was directly influenced by JoJo Part 4 (the sky in the town's game even has a yellow stylized filter) so you might be at home there, but Persona 3 has the less generic anime characters and more mature themes overall
Shin Megami Tensei is completely different with a way darker dystopian story most of the time but with the same battle system. Nocturne is a good place to start there.
