I know there's no game like Dwarf Fortress, but are there any games that get remotely close (in terms of gameplay, aesthetics, design philosophy)?
Rimworld?
Have you tried Aurora 4x? theres a reason its called Dwarf Fortress in space.

I've never played this but I love the soundtrack

Yes, I have. I like it better than DF, actually. Maybe it's the setting. Both games need lots of micromanagement, but in Aurora, it somehow feels more rewarding.

It's brilliant
>most management games are played for long hours, and their soundtracks get repetitive (if they have soundtracks at all)
>this dev makes an hour-long comfy OST for his ASCII-based management game

If you enjoyed Aurora, you should give Distant Worlds Universe a try. It has better diplomacy, better AI and the micro management is fun.

I have tried it, and I do like the automation a lot. Ship design is good, too.
ADOM?

I like ADOM so much. Some people complain that there is too much wiki-diving in the game, but I just appreciate how big in scope it feels, and even how convoluted it gets sometimes. No other roguelike is like this.
I've actually beaten it yet (on any ending), but I still try to go through some of the requirements for ultra ending.
