Both are pretty good. Its true that the 2nd one is better, but the first one is still worth playing and it will give you more information about the characters your traveling with.

Completely false. I didn't play either until about 5 years ago ('m 26) and consider both to be among the best games ever made. I've replayed them twice since then. It's not almost a yearly ritual.
As for OP, yes you should play 1 first. They are both very enjoyable.

It is in terms of mechanics but imo BG1 has better plot and feeling of adventure.
Also a lot of people prefer low level D&D.

I think there is a mod that lets you play BG 1 in BG2 engine, look it up.
Also look for a widescreen mod if you want to play it in high res.

Naw BG2 is better in just about every way except for exploration. BG1's plot only picks up at the end while BG2's only wavers at the end.
You could skip directly to 2 without much of a problem, especially considering it's one of those "muh amnesia" plots. That's only if you feel the pressing need to play 2 immediately tho. Do whatchu want senpai.

Skip 1, it's kind of boring desu. If you're into using magic, low level mages are pretty boring in BG1, especially since there's an EXP cap, which prevents you from over leveling.
BG1's story takes a while to pick up as well, in the beginning you're confused AF what the game is all about and where to go. Eventually, you find where you need to go, do some bullshit, and some more bullshit, and then the game gets really good, and then it's quickly over. UHHHHHH.
