It teaches you everything about the basics that you need to know. Its the only book series that we used in my Japanese courses in school and I can play my Japanese wank games un-translated and understand it somewhat even though I last studied it 4 years ago. I can hold conversations with my Japanese teacher when I stumble upon him now and then when I go grocery shopping (tradition at this point). Reading isn't as hard as most people think it is, and the Genki books ease you into it nicely via romaji (japanese words written with the alphabet) into furigana (basic hiragana underneath the 'kanji' letters) and then into non-hint Japanese
Every chapter is a sort of story of its own and it gives you a new set of vocabulary to learn in each via spoken dialogues and grammar.
It has a nice pace to it as well so you never feel like you're going too fast
The book will introduce kanji to you early, but you will be provided furigana for the entire book, book 2 removes it.
It also has plenty of exercises that trains your speaking and writing, and at the end of it there's some more in-depth exercises that starts giving kanji writing, not as hard as you think, and once you start learning the hiragana and katakana alphabets you realize how fucking important kanji are to not make reading an absolute mess since a lot of words share the exact same pronunciation (kami can be paper, hair and deity etc. so without the kanji you'd have to guess based on the subject at hand.)
But yeah, I highly recommend this book, get it if you can. Its a tome of 340 pages that will make understand Japanese at an entrylevel and beyond if you keep going with the series.
