You find several letters describing some guy's travels that say "First I travelled to the east" or "Later I travelled to the north" and such. When you put them in the right order going by the text clues, they give you a correct sequence for the stone movements.

Pro tips for puzzle solving like a non-faggot:

>Identify every element in your arsenal. Every item, every ability.
>Identify every element in play with the level or the puzzle. Break things into steps.
>Ask "Why" for everything you see.
"Why was this X placed here?"
"Why did the artist design this area's visuals this way?"
"Why did the sound designer put this audio cue here?"
>Try every solution twice. Sometimes you will be very close to the right solution but your execution was off by a small margin. Sometimes a little brute force is necessary
>Do your best to think outside the box. Try solutions you've ruled out or ones that you've dismissed. Try things you wouldn't normally do or expect to do in the game.
>Think about what elements the developer has groomed you to (player training, they call it) and which ones they haven't.
>Write stuff down. Draw out diagrams.
>Take a break.

At least the LucasArts ones didn't punish you as badly like the Sierra ones, and tended to have more "sensible" puzzles.

After a few of LucasArts games I stared getting the hang of them, but Sierra ones were so devious and there were plenty of ways to make your progress unwinnable.

The only company close to LucasArts in terms of puzzles that for the most part you can solve is Daedalic Entertainment. Just like the later LucasArts games I was able to get through the Deponia games without looking up too many hints.

The green orb/chandelier puzzle in Out of this World is awful.

So there's this guard on a lower floor that is blocking your path. A couple screens above him there's this little gap where you can shoot at this orb suspended from the ceiling. You can see a little reflection of the guard pacing around and when you shoot it, it makes a loud sound and falls to the ground. It takes a couple seconds before it makes its "hit_the_floor", and since the guard will flee the instant you break the chandelier's cord and it starts to fall the logical solution is to time it so when the orb hits the ground, he'll be in the right spot. Nope. You have to wait until he stands still. Then when you shoot the orb, he doesn't flinch, even though he should be able to hear it just fine. It's really awful. It sort of ruins the game for me.

I died several hundred times here trying to get the trinket, since I was too stupid to realize what the real strategy was.

Because of the name of the screen (filename related), I thought that the intended strategy was to warp around the sides at the same time one of the fishy things did, so that you would avoid hitting it. I actually got the warping around to work once every ten or so tries, which further misled me. I felt so retarded after seeing a video on youtube that used the actual way to do it.

This room alone probably took up a third or a fourth of the time I took to beat the game.

I didn't google it, but I remember being kind of stumped by a puzzle in Ass Creed Black Flag. It was the one where you had to match blocks representing prey to plates representing predators.
I thought I had to anaylze the blocks and match them to the correct predator based on the animal.

I did this for a couple minutes until I realised I literally just had to match the red block to the red plate.
I just thought it was less stupid than it turned out to be.

The first time I fought this guy, I didn't think to try shooting his eyes because I had tried shooting the eyes of previous colossi and nothing happened for them. The logic was sound: if it didn't work for them, it must not work for him, so don't bother. So I ended up shooting for the other big bright glowing part of him: his mouth. By some freak occurrence, the first shot I took at his mouth must have hit his eyes, which I didn't notice, sending him into his vulnerable state. So, it implanted in my head that the mouth was the intended weakpoint. I then spent the next two hours trying to get another shot in his mouth to make him vulnerable.

They did end up removing it from the remix.

I guess in retrospect, it seems very likely that a child would either not happen to examine the vending machine, are not remember it in particular considering how much useless junk there was in Pokemon.

I know that the scenario of getting a thirsty person a drink isn't confusing at all, but from a gameplay perspective it's one of the more odd non-optional things you need to do in Pokemon.

I never had a problem with it and I was in kindergarten when the game came out. Literally all the guards tell you they're parched and would love a drink. I like to think that the younger you are when you played it, the less likely you are to get tripped up on that part. When I played it I was well-versed in RPG tropes, so I made the assumption that some key item or event would show up that would allow me to progress instead of buying a consumable to see if that would work. Really, I can't think of many RPGs that require you to buy some consumable to progress.

With that, the effects of pressing down are more immediately noticeable while the barrel requires you to hold up and down for a while before you see it's working.

I beat the game without guides but fuck, this was the most stupid thing I've been stuck at ever.

I didn't think about just jumping into the place where the door was because i thought that wall was to high to reach it. Or maybe I failed my first attempt and then thought it was impossible.

I tried everything, jumping from the far column by rolling, playing the song of time next to the wall, baiting some skulls to hit me mid air, tried to reach it with hookshot... I gave up for 2 months and went to do water temple and gerudo's fortress.

Then my father said: why don't you just try jumping?

"Naaah it won't work..."
boy was I retarded

king's quest 6 took me about a year, kq 7 is easy as fuck, it doesn't even have fail states like the rest of them, so it was less than a month. space quest 5 is also somewhat easy and it's short, so i think it was about 3 months. Larry 6 is one my least favorite sierra games, but i've powered through it in about 6 months. I didn't actually play QFG3 (thought it was 4 for some reason, which i did finish).
Of course trial and error was a part of it, but that was the fun back then. We used to have a lot more patience.

Depends on the puzzle.

Some are solvable trough trial and error and before I do that, I straight up google the solution. (those "free the princess" riddles from Layton is a good example. You COULD technically plan out every step before actually doing one or just brute force but that's boring and unsatisfying)

If it's one of those you have to solve by just "getting" it, I ponder for days before giving in.

Are you afraid? As though inviting you to the agonyat the play's end, if you wish, youcould destroy me — I wouldn't care.As you wish, you may destroy me— I wouldn't care."

Honestly my biggest beef is that it's just bad at conveying ideas, and some of the puzzles are like, Sierra-tier nonsense. The ham thing I mentioned in my first post for one. Another part I got stuck on was Cackle Tower (Spiderweb Island dungeon) where there's one of those DK barrel-style worm mouth things, and you can shoot it through what looks like a solid wall. There's a visual cue in the form of a window in the wall, but the background behind the window is the exact same shade of almost-black gray that the window's borders and the surrounding walls are, so it's easy to miss. The shape of the wall also seems to imply that the only valid direction to shoot is down or right, and you just came from the right. I mean, that one's kind of on me, but it kind of goes back to the game being really bad at conveying shit.

Just as a personal note, I really hate the thing in 2D platformers where they hide stuff in completely normal-looking walls. It's not fun to have to press my face up against every wall in the event that something important is in there. At least they had the decency to make you auto-crawl if the space was too narrow. And sparkle and make a sound if you shot it with Risky's old gun I guess, which meant you didn't necessarily have to touch the wall you wanted to check.
