It's not that hard since we don't know a lot yet.
I'll try and summarize what we know.
The Halcandrians were an ancient, technologically advanced race native to Halcandra. Halcandra exists in Another Dimension, a parallel dimension to Kirby's. The Halcandrians are thought to have created several galactic comets known as Novas, the Lor Starcutter, Master Crown, Star Rod, and other ancient technology. Galacta Knight may be a Halcandrian. Haltmann Works was a company that went around harvesting natural resources and converting the planet into a mechanized husk. At some point, Max Haltmann found a Nova (possibly the one Kirby destroyed) and realized they could grant wishes. Sparing no time in the interest of galactic conquest, he rebuilt the machine and tried to activate it. His daughter Susie was lost in an accident with the computer that sent her to Another Dimension, and Haltmann was heartbroken. He tried to finish building the machine in order to bring her back, but Kirby threw a wrench in his plans and he reactivates it too early, and it takes control of him. Cue final boss of Robobot.

Instead of extra mode you get Dedede Tour in TD, and another Meta Knightmare like in Superstar at the end of PR. TD is a little slow at the beginning, but still has a hype ending to both the main story and extra mode, while PR is hype throughout most of the game.
Would it make sense to bring back animal friends given the current Super Star style of abilities? Would it even be feasible? The Robobot armour comes off as kind of similar but it was still limited in what it could copy and how many moves it could use.

They don't have extra mode but they do have other modes similar to it. TD is basically a handheld version of RtDL and PR expands on what TD did so you'll definitely enjoy them.

It's up the devs. stone transformations have clearly shown that they still think about the animal buddies but I think in order to bring them back they would casualize the control scheme and not make the power combinations so awkward like in DL 1 and 2. Amazing is not what I'd call it. It does have a chance, but the sequel needs to streamline the designs and aesthetics, while raising the stakes and going back to simple controller conrols.
