Sony probably isn't lying, but I doubt they're being entirely earnest. Newer games will probably run on a PS4, but they'll run better on PS4N.
Consoles are 'obsolete' upon release from a performance perspective. As long as it can play the games at 720p resolution with more than 24 frames per second it fulfills its original purpose and isn't entirely deprecated. I seriously doubt you'll end up reaching 1080p once developers start aiming for the Neo's specifications though. Still, upscaled 720p isn't bad, and most players won't notice it.
Pretty sure the ps4 will be 100% cucked by the Neo upon release.
I'm debating whether or not to buy the neo, I'm especially salty considering I just bought my ps4 3 weeks ago.
You can bet your ass that either ps4 gets fucked over with shit framerate or that neo gets fucked over because ps4 holds it back.

I believe they were being honest when they said they'd support the PS3 long after the PS4 came out but with their financial issues and the overwhelming success of the PS4 they made a choice to abandon that promise.

It's definitely gonna happen. Sony needs to push the neo consoles. They'll AstroTurf and bully weak minded sony ponies into upgrading and following their mantra of bullying sonyggers into upgrading.

Another thing is the actual performance. The PS4 Neo is only about twice as powerful as the regular PS4. People who want the stronger console and rich normies will get the Neo. People who just want to play PS4 games will just get the cheaper option.
Compare that to the Xbox Scorpio which is drastically stronger than the regular Xbone? And the fact that Xbox games will also be on PC? There is no point in getting a regular Xbone, just get the Scorpio or build a cheap gaming PC.
It also depends on your definition of obsolete. If you're a PC gamer, the PS4 was obsolete 3 years ago.
How many people have a regular PS4? 40 million? Sony would be committing suicide if they just up and stop support for that console.
And finally, there is no game exclusivity. That's the biggest thing preventing the PS4 from going obsolete. All the PS4 Neo is, is a premium version of the same shit.

I think many games will be the same between them for awhile after its launch. Some devs might not want any bad press or lower sales if their game is far inferior on the normal PS4. Eventually there may be a majority made with the Neo as priority once a lot of them have been sold.

The PS4 was obsolete the moment the Neo was announced. Why buy a weaker console with 1 game when you can buy a slightly stronger console with 3 game by the time it's out?

The common buyer will not be interested in buying a 4k TV and/or buying ANOTHER PS4. No one on their right mind would buy another PS4 while still having one that works perfectly, even less to play 1080p upscaled games in 4k.

I was going to buy a ps4 at xmas, but the prices jumped, so held off.
Then I heard rumours about Neo, and then the announcement.
It's stopped me again from getting one.
The system still doesn't have a great shelf space in stores, it's a little pathetic. There's a few games I want, but hopefully I can ween myself off of consoles at this rate.
