Seeing as we're going by twitch numbers, HotS has almost double Smite's viewers.
HotS takes an already disgustingly casual genre, one that is completely oversaturated and whose biggest games are already firmly established, and somehow manages to dumb it down even more. Now, Overwatch is also horribly streamlined and casual, but it's a shooter and a TF2 clone in a time where TF2 is already long dead in most people's eyes because of all the dumb shit they've done to it over the years. It fills a void in its genre whereas HotS merely exists on the fringe of an overcrowded one that players already invested in LoL or Dota 2 simply don't want or need to bother with in addition to their game of choice.

It's babbies first FPS and they added simple moba elements that made it easy for league faggots to transition.
The fact that it's an FPS solves a lot of balance issues that plagued league and still plague league.
Riot had already destabilized it's player base and at least 50% of it wanted to move on to a new game.

League did everything HoTs did so there was no reason to play it.
It also came out during a time that leagues player base was stable and not looking for a new game.

Smite is easily more popular than HotS. HotS is a distant fourth and dying more each day. Smite only succeeds for being a third person take on the genre too rather than isometric which makes it different enough to coexist with LoL and Dota.

HoTS wasn't a good game, objective focus way too forced(in dota and lol you know what to do, in hots the map tells you what to do and when to do it), too few heroes compared to other mobas(makes it so you HAVE to pay for some hheroes because the amount you get in free week is pitiful), also unbalanced.
It was an okay game though, Illidan was fun, but most friends went back to the games we used to play so yeah no reason to play it
OW did incredibly well in marketing and had good appealing designs, and since Riot is doing the best they can to destroy LoL a good chunk of their playerbase jumped into OW, the game itself is good
