/v/ help me, I'm trying to find a new addiction. A single player game, something with:

-Smooth and satisfying action/combat
-Secret gathering or exploration
-Solid AI
-Challenging but not hair-tearingly difficult
-Playable on a PC (emulators count)

Any ideas? Doom spoiled me and I've played it to death lately. Gotta take a break from it.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow Of Chernobyl on Master.
Find a mod where you get a better pistol or something and then its not so difficult to start.
>>
>>342431286
Just the first one or did the sequels improve at all?

>>342431487
You know I keep giving up on this one because the guns seemed to function like shit, but I guess if mods can fix it I might be willing to give it another go.
>>
>>342431816
the first one. It still has the best AI of any shooter ever made, which is a huge factor in making the combat fun as hell. For a challenge you can play on hard and use quicksave if its too difficult

Notice the AI soldier in the window at the beginning of this webm w/ sound:

>>342430938
Try onf painkiller series, the Ai isnt solid but it has imo smooth combat and it has some exploration
>>
>>342430938
The Metroid series, pretty difficult to wrong

>inb4 Other M
Yeah that's the one bad game, just play any of the others
>>
Witcher 3. Easy. Play it on the second hardest difficulty and it meets all of your requirements.
>>
If you can tolerate memes, the Borderlands series is decent
>>
>>342432272
That looks pretty wicked. I have no idea why I haven't played this yet.

>>342432542
Painkiller... I keep hearing about that one. Is Hell and Damnation any good?

>>342432680
Is Witcher 3 well optimized? My machine is pretty good but not top-of-the-line so I can't power past bad optimization. GTX 770 with a 4.0 gHz processor if that helps.

>>342432817
Oof... those memes though....

If you haven't played it trust me it's not hard, it's no walk in the park though
>>
Devil May Cry 1 and 3 on emulator, do not play the PC version of 3. If they're that hard, you need to git gud.
>>
>>342433572
I second this.

DMC 3 sounds exactly like what OP wants. 4 is pretty good to and has an incredible PC port. 1 is pretty old so it does not play as smoothly, but has a great atmosphere
>>
>>342431816
>Just the first one or did the sequels improve at all?

FEAR 2 and the expansions for both are still pretty quality

FEAR 3 is okay for a playthrough but it's not as good as the others
>>
>>342433004
Hmmm... combat looks like Gears of War.

>>342433572
>>342433929
I have the PS3 collection, haven't gone back to try to beat either of them though. I'm really bad at gitting gud, admittedly, but I do enjoy them.

I would suggest playing DMC3 first. Its a bit more forgiving, pretty good bosses, and once you get the hang of whatever style you chose, its much easier and more fun.
The AI isn't too good tho.
>Level 3 Trickster versus Final Vergil
>Rebellion and Beowulf combos with Trickster
>>
>>342434778
Hmm I might actually throw this back in. Of the bunch DMC3 felt the best, but I figured I should play them in order (barring 2, bleh). I guess no big deal to start with 3?

>Hmmm... combat looks like Gears of War.
Well that's because...

>"Kill Switch is best remembered for being the first third-person shooter to feature the cover system as its core game mechanic, and for introducing the blind fire mechanic to the cover system.Several shooters took inspiration from Kill Switch and implemented similar cover systems. In the design of Gears of War, lead developer Cliff Bleszinski of Epic Games credits Kill Switch's cover system as one of the influences they put into the game's design, as Kill Switch's lead designer Chris Esaki was employed by Epic Games and was involved in the development of Gears of War."

I thought it was fine since it was a prequel to the rest of the series, but there are some minor jokes or references you can miss cause you haven't finished 1.
I don't know /v/'s opinion on this though, since I didn't feel like asking when I first tried out the HD collection.

>>342430938
Armored Core 2 if you like mech gaems.
>>
>>342430938
idk if playable on PC... but I just tried Bloodborne (never played and souls games) and it was actually surprisingly addictive even though it was very challenging.
>>
This is going to sound like it doesn't match what you're looking for, but go take a look anyway.

>>342436459
Huh, well that explains everything indeed. I never felt like Gears had gummy gunplay though. Would you say KS fairs better?

>>342437074
Ehhhh, I don't mind 'em. AC2 is the best of the bunch?

>>342437180
Don't think that one is playable on PC :\

>>
>>342437623

>>
>>342437623
AC2 is just a good starting point. Not too complex and not too difficult. The best is AC3/Silent Line then Nexus/Last Raven imo.

There is a bit of a learning curve when it comes to controls.
>>
I'll just post in here rather than make my own thread. I'm looking for a game that's a hybrid strategy/beat em up. Kinda like Dynasty Warriors: Empires but not full price because Japs never fucking lower that shit. I have already played hundreds of hours of Mount & Blade.
>>
>>342430938
Why has there never been a good starship troopers game?
>>
>>342433165
I love Mount and Blade way more than most but the guy asked for solid AI.
>>
>>342437838
Solid, I'll add those to the list.

>>342436989
Ah, well that's no big deal. Maybe I'll play wikipedia catch-up before I play.

Unreal. Dont ignore it, torrent if you have to, just play it.

>Smooth and satisfying action/combat
Yep, lots of good chunky guns to play with and fast movement.
>Secret gathering or exploration
Some exploration, boat loads of atmosphere. GOAT soundtrack.
>Solid AI
Still some of the best around, decent variety.
>Challenging but not hair-tearingly difficult
Depends on the difficulty though I recommend at least hard.
>Playable on a PC (emulators count)
Its on steam, or torrent it.

Another solid recommendation is the first Half-life.

I play autistic simulators like cities skylines or factorio to replenish my enjoyment quota I spend with action/combat fps/rpg's.

I have a 770 and I've played all of Witcher 3 and the expansions with pretty good fps (usually 50-60) on high and ultra settings, so you should be good.
>>
>>342430938

As far as fps go S.T.A.L.K.E.R or F.E.A.R.

For 3rd person action Dragons Dogma. The story is pretty meh but the gameplay mechanics are amazing.
