The mission structure is what personally killed my motivation to even finish it. All of the levels were like 30 minutes long with no opportunity to stop whenever you want, and if you're trying to go for the highest rank, which requires a balance of getting to the end quickly, avoiding as much damage as possible, AND meticulously inspecting every single thing for money, you tend to end up repeating the same 30 minute segments over and over again. And even worse if you're having trouble finding a Boo. I played up to somewhere in the middle of the sandy mansion before completely losing the desire to go on.

The antagonists lost a lot of character and the worlds no longer feels like cohesive wholes, both of which are either due to or certainly not helped by the limitations of their respective platforms. Yep. Some people want another SMB2(USA) type game that returns to Subcon, but I'd rather all of that stuff be left alone. Everything from that game feels nice and complete to me, and bringing it all out again would only dilute it and end in complaints.
What I'd really like to see them do with Mario is just use new lands and enemies for a while. SMB2USA and Mario Land 1 and 2 used entirely different lands from mainstay Mario, and even if Mario World had Bowser as the main villain again Dinosaur Land at least had a lot of new enemies, many of which were probably just wild creatures not actually working for Bowser. Mario used to be inventive as fuck. What we need isn't to bring all that old stuff back, it's to keep adding in things that are brand new and have a different flavor.

I hate to bring into this thread all the typical shit that gets tossed around in Paper Mario threads, but it really is a problem with Miyamoto thinking he's "perfected" the Mario brand and not wanting to deviate from the very sterilized image it has these days it out of fear of not being recognizable to 4-year olds and retarded parents. There WAS a time when Mario was inventive as fuck and pushed boundaries in every direction, but Nintendo, or at least Miyamoto, just wants it to be "that series that you can always expect to feel familiar and nostalgic because there's no room for expansion or interpretation anymore". As much of a buzzword as "soulless" is, there's a reason why it gets tossed around so much, and a part of that is because it's always just "muh generic Toads and Goombas and Koopas and NSMB artstyle" in everything. Spinoffs back in the day used to have their own "flavor" that differentiated them, but that's pretty much nonexistent now.

I'm not really a fan of SPM, but it deserves credit for inventive world building as well. It gave Mario an organized multiverse and an afterlife, and it has a ton of backstory and lore in the background for people who want to find it.
Admittedly it isn't really built around established Mario stuff like the first two games, but still.
