Zelda 2 would be the best game in the series if it had no exp/levelup system and a more forgiving magic system. Even as it stands now it's a great game, just obtusely designed like many of its era.

Almost no one would say that and even then its not completely unheard of, hell a lot more people say the worst zelda is their favorite.
Zelda 2 is one of the few games where you both need a guideat least for the obscure hidden shitand despite that is still challenging and fun

My only issue is all the dead ends in the final dungeon, & the fact that it's almost impossible to beat if you don't collect all the Link dolls one after another before you head into that dingeon.
Also, I feel like I cheat since I never beat the game without crouch stabbing Evil Link.

Zelda 2 is such a different game that you really can't directly compare it to the rest of the series.
I wish it had been separate from the Zelda series, I would have loved to see sequels in that style.

That is my favorite. Doesn't mean it's the best one.
I was the only kid determined enough to beat that game when I was young. Got huge props for beating it back in 2nd grade. I was "the wizard" to them. I think I was also the only one with a subscription to Nintendo power. I mean yeah some kids would just buy the issues but I had the commitment. Every year my grandma would re-up my subscription for my birthday.
RIP grandma. I miss the feels of playing games Zelda 2 in a dark cold basement on a hot summer day then playing basketball when it got cool enough outside. Being a kid was awesome.

IX is my favorite and i do like Kefka, but obviously it's terrible to call him best written villain. He's simple but effective and you can hate him pretty easily while finding him amusing on the same time, which is an accomplishment. By the way, IX is pretty good to replay, i do it between 2-3 years intervals, not boring at all to me.
