Any community of even vaguely competitive games comes up with the "Forced 50%" theory. They believe that the games matchmaking purposefully sends them to players vastly beyond their skill level to ensure a 50% winrate for all players. Even ignoring the fact that game devs have literally no reason to include this as a feature, there's a basic logic that would make it common sense.
When you do well consistently, matchmaking will start to match you with better players, increasing the chance you will find enemy players better than you and lose. When you do poorly, you get worse players and therefore win. This means most players will wobble between 40-60% winrate depending on their current streak.

Overwatch is different than most games tho. In the surface is how you say it is, but deep down there are other considerations on it that dont let good players get a real matchmaking experience, hence falling in the 50%
For example, the game will take as consideration players that dont play the same heroes as you, hence why you will end up playing with so many hanzos/widows/Genjis even if they are not necessarily the most played characters.
Pin is also taken in consideration as it is the map itself. Blizzard did a great job (50% for most players makes it fun for most players), but the matchmaking does not pair you up with people of the same skill, but with people of similar stats on the map and who play different heroes.
I had a way better ratio when i used to play call of duty, here it seems nearly impossible to get past 60% unless you play with good friends and a ergo avoid the match making.
