You use the math related to battle height, level, etc to target spells.
Say you chose height, prime. All characters at prime number elevations would be blasted or healed by that spell. And it costs no mp.

In tactics at least a geomancer had access to different elemental magic spells depending on which type of terrain tile they were standing on.
Stand on rocks, earth spells. Stand on grass, snare people with vines. Standing in water, ice spells, etc.
It was a pretty unique gimmick and added an element of terrain management to your unit positioning. I don't know if it's something that's been repeated in other games.
