The problem with this is, that you're using the community as an argument AGAINST TF2. How is lime a bad colors? Many cosmetic look very cool with this colors and it fit well in many of them. Okay, i want to make up my mind about this game.
I played it a bit back when hats were not a thing and it was still not f2p. It was fun for a couple of weeks but i dropped it, forgetting.
Then people cried it's f2p. Then people cried about furries, afk servers, trading scams, whatever. Then everyone is crying that it's dead.
I know it has a lot of players, but who are they? Who is playing TF2 still?
Everyone who played it long ago left. I can't imagine anyone picking it up right now seeing how it's so hard to get into all the items, and the game is dated and there's this new game everyone is talking about, you know. Is it people too invested in it to drop it? Casuals who picked it up 3 or 4 years ago?
And why is it talked about like a competitive game? Does it have a ladder of some kind or rankings or something? Are there teams and tourneys?

Hats were a thing before it was F2P. So were AFK servers, furries, and trading scams. AFK servers aren't so big now that they made drops less common specifically to combat idlers, among a few other things to make idling less efficient. The furries and bronies were never any more common than in most PC games.

It's not. Stock weapons are the strongest for every class. Though the viable alternate weapons are given as reward for basic class-specific achievements. Every weapon is also the same price if you were to trade for it, at one scrap.

Valve recently added competitive matchmaking, but there had always been a competitive scene before then. It's a small part of the game, so you either heard it because of the new matchmaking or because the skill ceiling for most classes is crazy high.

Cartoony doesn't describe it. It's got style, and an incredibly charming look and feel to it. And it's got more depth than 90% of shooters, whoever told you it had no depth was bad at it.

In any case, TF2 being well built at one point (the key there being at one point) doesn't mean I am going to bother having a bad time playing it now because of the community and other reasons. And over the years there have been many flawed pieces being added to its structure.
