Unless dressed up and utilized to its full potential games just tend to look dated on it.

Something everybody has already experienced and that some people choose to latch on to because of its "revolutionary" or counterculture appeal.

Nope.
>>

1984 and to a lesser extent Brave New World.
>>
>>342386521
It's getting a lot of traction because the first actual trailer and gameplay has existed for a while and gone unnoticed.

People just saw a new concept trailer this year but at e3 so it got a lot more exposure. People are hyped for the interesting concept without realising that it is going to fail for being an open world survival game.
>>
>>342388017
I liked Metal Gear's story.

Well, the first one. Most of it. In its own endearingly over-the-top way.

But the idea of it focusing on random scavenging rather than the psychological aspects of the story makes me wary.

Trying to blend in with these people while having fits of normal feelings or seeing what is actually happening instead and trying to suppress that emotion not only from the populace but the authorities as well. While you either try to escape, uncover the truth, or take down what's responsible.

I had the impression that it was a bit more like how Hitman can be "non-linear" in the sense of having dozens of possible ways to progress through a small environment.

If it's actually "open world", that's way less interesting.
>>
>all these people shoehorning the game into 1984 and Brave New World

Speaking of HS literature,

Did anyone else enjoy Great Expectations?

Everyone hated it at my school but me.
>>
>>342390929
The E3 trailer has a very straight shot-out to 1984, with the guy censoring newspapers and getting some depressive enlightenment when seeing a very specific article. Also the whole Uncle Jack thing plays very much like Big Brother.
The Brave New World influence comes mostly from the "take your joy and be happy with us or go to starve and die a sad savage in the outsides".
Also the whole British post-WWII setting.

It's not literally one or the other, but it looks to be a pretty sloppy amalgamation of both Brave New World and 1984.
