The story is fake or misinterpreted, you don't get sued by an attacker and go to jail, there isn't debtors prison anymore. The cops decide if your use of force was proportionate and then you get charged criminally in court in that case, but not sued by the individual. That would be entirely separate.

Go to a local pound and adopt, preferably a lab mix. You should be able to take them out and play with them a little, that's when you can usually determine if you'll like them or not. Try to find one that's a little docile, maybe had a rough life before going to the pound. Once they trust you they will follow you everywhere and enjoy your company, good deterrent for anyone who doesn't know you, and just generally be happy to be with you. Just make sure to take puppers on daily walks and you will love each other very much.
