I really enjoy playing Overwatch.
But it makes me think about an argument I had with a old coworker a few years ago about Team Fortress.
It’s shitty that Team Fortress doesn’t allow you to play as a woman, was my point. The game is clearly fun, but it could be even better.
I don’t really see the demand or need for it, was his.
It’s a game with an incredibly strong, deliberate design sense, and you can’t say the demand isn’t there when half the cosplayers I see are women doing genderbent versions of the classes. Half the fan art, too. They should add a female model for each class and let people choose, was my point.

I'm not being ironic either, I'm totally into how Overwatch handles things. And the diversity shit feels much less forced given the setting's theme of cooperation between nations. A little sugary for me but it works. Plus the characters are all very well designed. Nobody is just RACE X WEIGHT Y GENDER Z, it's all very cohesive and aesthetic. I'm a big fan of the style.

I set the game's audio to Japanese though and have already completely forgot about their nationalities. The Japanese voice pack's got Hachikuji, Rory, Santana, Precures, ara aras, and so on, so it sounds like an anime every match; which is wonderful. I couldn't stand hearing gooks speak and amateur hour english voice acting, so I'm glad they added the option. Don't recommend it to any non-/jp/sies though. It's still important to know what they're saying.

How is it shitty that TF2 didn't have playable women? How would it have made it better? TF2 revolves around cut throat mercenaries in the 1950s and a revolving joke within the universe is that some characters are starved for female attention, so they pine after the singular attractive female character, Miss Pauling. overwatch takes place in a semi-futuristic setting where the playable characters range anywhere from engineers, to mercenaries/soldiers, to medics and to characters who are downright common criminals. There is no strong "lore" reason behind the gameplay; that's all self-contained within the comics and shorts. So they can play it loosely goosey. In TF2 the gameplay world and the world in the comics and shorts are one in the same so there is some required consistency.
