>DUDE, VIOLENCE IS WRONG BUT AT THE SAME TIME HERE'S A GAME THAT COMPLETELY GLORIFIES VIOLENCE IN EVERYWAY, LMAO

Is there a more pretentious game? I have doubts that one exists.

It's a liberal manifesto as well

>Jacket vomits after killing that hobo
"please don't hurt the poor and downtrodden"
>Jacket spends the entire game killing white mobsters, black mobsters and cops
"Killing whites and their house niggers is perfectly acceptable! Cops are evil!"

>>
Sure, but isn't it right? We know killing is wrong and when we are directly confrontated with it in real life it's revolting. Yet it's completely glorified, entertaining and fun in media.
It's not really pretentious. You just hate the thought of literal children and edgy teenagers playing this game and then thinking they are #deep.

Like how can you be so oblivious to your generalizations that are even false?
>>
Meta narratives are inherently pretentious shit (why write fiction if you immediately destroy the illusion), that doesn't make the game bad though, you're free to ignore the plot entirely
>>
>>342368234
Its only doing the Bioshock thing where it points out a relationship between the difference between people actual violence, and questions why violence in entertainment is so accepted. Not really ptetentious at all. I bet you think books are pretentious too.

>it's not glorifying itself or me when I play

this generation is doomed. Millennials need to be pampered and told they're a "good boy" just like dogs whatever they do. Or else they start whining and demanding praise for literally anything.

OP your parents were fucking idiots.
>>

Outdated, shitty copypastas thread?

>Game gives you a bike
>Shortly thereafter, Paula joins your party, making the bike useless

BRAVA EARTHBOUND.

BRAVA

And what the fuck was the point of the condiment system?

>Oh man, waste a slot to carry a packet of salt instead of just having another hamburger!

When I think about it, this game actually kind of does suck. For an RPG, it has no replay value to speak of

>99% linear with no side quests
>No party organization to give certain characters priority over others
>No unique equipment builds that reward smarter thinking, not harder thinking
>No way to truly test your characters skills with the lack of a new game+ feature

Would have been nice to have, but this is give or take:
>Alternate party members
>Alternate endings
>Monster/boss arena

At the end of the day, it's still a VIDEO GAME and not an "interactive experience". You don't cut Gone Home any slack(the hipsters that love Earthbound LOVE Gone Home as well), neither should you with Earthbound.

I find that's the only way people do it, too. It's always "YOU DID THIS, YOU MONSTER!" but it never gives you an alternative. I think Spec Ops comes to mind.

I don't fucking feel like a monster when it literally gave me no other option. It's even worse when it tries to hammer it home by constantly referencing what a monster you've become, which a lot of things seem to do as well.

That's what devs who want to do that sort of thing need to learn. There's only really two ways for you to do it properly:

A: Give the player choices, so when he does something selfish or horrible, and someone calls him on it, the player understands that he COULD have taken the high road, he just didn't want to.

B: Make it imperative that the player does evil shit. You still have to offer some sort of choice (or at least some illusion of choice). Like, the character is being forced to do terrible things in order to prevent his family from being killed, and if you choose not to do it, his family is murdered and he kills himself, bad ending. The problem with this is that the game needs to make you care a lot about this fictional family over a short period of time (or save this sort of thing for the very end) in order to make you WANT to do the terrible things.

it doesn't say that violence is necessarily bad or evil, it says that violence is like a drug. That's why is set in the 80's, why the soundtrack is so trippy and catchy, why there's a lot of colorful if ever so slightly nauseating imagery. Simply put, the message is VIOLENCE = DRUG

Violence enthralls and excites us in the heat of the moment, but after we "come down" we realize how fucked up the consequences are. Regardless we are addicted, and both the player and humanity by large, soldier on and seek more violence.

What a coincidence. I started playing the games this week. Finished Hotline Miami 1 yesterday.

I still have a few questions, but can I expect that everything will be solved in the second part? I'm thinking about the fact that in the prank call level, the biker guy kills jacket, but in the early level, you kill biker guy as jacket...

I'm currently at the subway level with the non-lethal guy (Evan?). His levels make really good use of your melee skills.
>>

>I don't fucking feel like a monster when it literally gave me no other option
Spec Ops isn't trying to "make you feel like a monster". It's about the player character, not the player. Why do millennials feel the need to project themselves onto the main character? Not everything revolves around you.

If you pay close attention to SpecOps its easy to see that the game is a gigantic strawman. If you've already grown out of the CoDkid phase then the game really dosent have anything to tell you

But thankfully it has other nice things like visuals and aesthetics to appreciate

God this thread reminds me of the ending of the last of us.
So many people hot butthurt about not being able to make the last "Big Decision" at the end in a game where decision and choice wasn't a factor outside of game play.
The story isn't about you, its about Joel and Ellie and their journey.
The ending wouldve been terrible if it was a player choice because it would have gone against Joels entire games worth of development.
>>
>>342379467
I agree, and the devs did a fantastic job picturing Walker abandoning the rest of his ideals in his attempt to be the big damn hero. For example, stealing the water. He had literally no plan other than "steal the water", where the fuck would they go after? Same thing with the radio tower.
There's also smaller things, like how at the start of the game the executions are very clean, mozambique drill style, whereas at the end Walker will kneecap enemies with an AA12 before blowing their heads off.
The way he commands his troops changes the deeper you get into the game too, at the beginning it's very tactical chatter but later on he just yells shit like "fuck him up" or "kill that bastard". After Lugo dies, he'll still call out for Lugo to take out targets if you try marking targets Lugo would traditionally go after earlier in the game as well.

If I recall correctly from the second game, themasks do two things. They hide the identity of the person so they don't have to really take responsibility for their actions. But the Hawaii Sgt. in the second game wears a skinned panther's head while saying that humans are only animals.
>>
>>342385051
Yes the masks are used in order to distance the killer from their actions because they were reduced to their base animal instincts.

one of the creators has a fear of humans with animal heads. So he used that. Just imagine a psycho killer with a rooster mask and a bloody bat, thats pretty scary. Also it protects the identity of the wearer. You see the people also use it to seperate themselves from the carnage they inflict. As jacket is using the masks he collects to mirror different thoughts in his head
>>
>>342373896
>I'm currently at the subway level with the non-lethal guy
after you knocked someone unconcious on the ground you can mount them and smash their face in further. If you do this twice he takes off his jacket and you can play him lethally. The drawback is that you cannot rack up combo points anymore by disarming weapons.
>>
>>342385721
Wrong, they both hallucinated/exaggerated their fights with each other. They're both alive in the sequel, and complete destruction of the head/body is a recurring theme among hallucinated killings of other 50B operatives (such as when jacket killed and mutilated the molotov thrower, which obviously was false/exaggerated because of the dream static).

static in 2 obviously marks mental episodes. But in 1 I always took it as jacket his brain falling apart from remembering his deeds while in coma. Like with the van guy it is obvious he lost himself and ripped apart the body. Same with hitting biker in the face.

I think the fight between the two is unrelated to the static (which was more jacket his brain repressing) but more that they each recall it differently. They hurt eachother and either one of them left the other for dead and left. Jacket remembers biker as being a savage who killed everyone and immediately attacked him. Biker didnt have to kill anyone and tries to argue with jacket.
