i suppose what i'm saying is that quake feels like a mish-mash of ideas from a team more interested in making 'doom in proper 3d' instead of a complete, coherent package. they only made a boss for the shareware level, the rest is just a 'you shot the monsters and got the thing' text. even the in-game 'objective' comes from a 'get the thing' text scroll, and you get a 'congration you done it' screen when you do the telefrag.

i suppose it's a miracle it was released given how obviously troubled its development was, but i'm not surprised it's the odd sheep of id

Quake 3 or Quake live for MP, Original Quake for SP.

For steam version of Quake there is no soundtrack because it was on a CD originally. To fix this download and install the "ultimate quake patch". Its like gzdoom for quake, has some graphical upgrades and widescreen support, etc. But it gives you the original Trent Reznor soundtrack which adds so much to the game.

Only a month and some change until Quakecon!!!

This is the only thing viable anymore. Straight up arena shooters where everyone is only separated by skill is a dead genre. Plenty of people tried to revive it and failed. It's fucking over. I knew if nu-id was going to release a multiplayer game it was gonna be akin to Team Fortress/Overwatch style because that's what sells and they're a business. I was hoping for a great single player Quake that harkened back to the original but these AAA studios are trying to fill different niches and nu-Doom already fills the fast paced single player shooter niche. I saw all this coming a mile away. I was just hoping they would have something to exceed my expectations, and it didn't. Now we gotta wait years to see the end product.

Quake, doom is fun. But quake 1's gameplay feels more panicked and frenetic. In quake you've almost always got an enemy behind you you're having to keep track of. And even when you don't. The ogres are leaving presents all over the level you've got to worry about.

Its a problem because despite skill, one control method is obviously superior to another, and we're talking about the core mechanic of these games - the controller.

Try to market a game where by simply using a controller instead of a mouse and keyboard puts you at a disadvantage.

Not saying that under no circumstance a controller can't compete - my friend had no comp and he dominated me and other kb/m users, but he was nuts-levels into it. But for the general levels of gamers, they found that controller vs kb/m, kb/m wins most of the time. You would have to adjust gameplay mechanics to balance it, which makes it even worse. I'd certainly like to see someone take another whack at it though with the knowledge in mind that its tried before and failed. Cross platform gaming is fun sometimes because you get to focus on specific things, for better or worse.

Then they went and made an open beta that was exactly the same as the closed beta, and I believe it was extended to be a longer period than the closed beta too. I think this year they may do a thing where you preorder Wolfenstein The New Colossus to get access to the Quake Champions beta, but that's just me being hopeful, because with my luck I'm probably not gonna get into a beta where participants are selected randomly. If you're right about beta codes being handed out then I'll easily pay 60 bucks for a code on ebay

Vores were as broken as I remember them. If an orb is chasing you, it will do 90 degree turns at a whim. They're awfully fucking designed, because unlike Revenants, their projectiles are much harder to deal with, so they slow down the pace of the game when they appear.
