Why doesnt the game have lasting appeal?
I really was expecting the game to be much higher considering american children are out of school for summer holidays now. Are all class-based shooters besides tf2 doomed to be financial successes, but fail in longevity?

MOBAs/RTS will awlays dominate streams because they are tactical matches where viewers can see information than just what the streamers point of view.
They can see minimap, enemy location, or even imagine plays, etc.
The game genre is also repetitive which allows for better insight.
FPSs like Overwatch games don't offer such information or freedom to the viewers and are limited to the streamers PoV. This is why other genres such as this one won't make it to #1.

The only thing that made Overwatch a smash success was normies who liked the quirky characters and epic for the win re(blog/tweet)able POTG gfycats, then they got distracted by Game of Thrones and Breath of the Wild. Overwatch still has a healthy and strong community, healthier and stronger than most games can ever dream of, but people are overblowing it when they hail it as a "League-killer."

OW is just an extension of the recent MOBA, with just enough differences to make it fresh. They've tailered and international cast of characters for people to think they enjoy the personality of, and to produce a shit ton of porn too. The game has just enough competitiveness for it not to be braindead, but is casual enough for a huge majority of sub-LoL players to also play. They're introduced the skins of popular Mobas like DOTA or LoL, and I've heard they've recently announced gun skins, exactly like CS:GO. And don't get me started on the advertising for this game.
Overwatch isn't meant to have lasting appeal, that's why it doesn't have it.
It's meant to appeal to every denomenator, from lowest vidya scrub, the /v/ waifufag, to supposed ""competitive"" groups (in the same way heartstone is ""competitive"").
I can't predict where this game is going, but Blizzard won't let such a good investment die. I expect it'll be around for a while, lasting appeal or not.

It's hard to watch
Lets say it is one guy streaming. Well then 90% of the game is always happening off screen, even if it is just slightly off their frame of view. Deaths can come quick and out of no where so you may not even see what really killed the guy.
Now when it is a tournament stuff works slightly better as you can move from player to player to get where the action is. Then comes the other issue that moment to moment gameplay often means very little in overwatch. To get a decent push you need to kill a lot of the team in one go which just doesn't happen a lot meaning it becomes two walls banging against each other for a while. This would be okay if the game was very tactical but it is very simple.

It's hard to read shit like this because every time I know that the person that says it is a fucking retard that is not only parroting what someone else said, but parroted it wrong.
What Blizzard killed was the competitive BW scene because they didn't get any cent from that, they didn't kill SC2, the moment a more casual, "fun" and accesible game started investing into eSports it obliterated SC2 and that's what it happened.
SC2 still has a decent playerbase (extremely good for an RTS), tournaments and patches.
