Regarding videogame merch we went from the "cool in the 80's" to the "rad and badass in the 90's" but the next 15 years have been a complete mess. Kids want to be different, but kids also want to use popular products, kids don't give a fuck about the games themselves, but they care about owning certain brands and the latest console. Previously you could slap Mickey's face or any other disney character on everything and it would sell (KH). Before you couldn't sell 10 hours games because people would complain and rent said games, nowadays people don't like long games and want to finish a campaign with ultra realistic graphics or play a quick arena match and forget about videogames until the next day.
Japan has always maintained their wacky side on advertisement and that is timeless, but the history of american advertisement has always been reliant on capturing the latest trends and bombarding teens with desires of things they don't need via sabotage mechanics, celebrity endorsements, or wow factors.
There has been so much focus on the mobile and internet industry, the actual advertisement trends have been neglected and no one seems to care, so you end up with cringy commercials and nonsensical things like the "splatatatatatatoon" or "badass" commercials adds that alienate actual teenagers and don't really have a target audience anymore.

I don't know, I had more fun playing it than Overwatch, and was planning on buying it eventually (maybe this next sale). To me it's probably the best interpretation of an FPS moba that we've had in recent years. (I never played SMNC or MNC). Maybe the WC3 dota mod for CS or Savage 1 and 2, but that's it. There were some issues with the UI and performance but I geniunely enjoyed the game, and loved the co-op mission I played.
Gearbox probably already recouped all their expenses on the game, everything else is just pure profit at this point.

Battleborn treats me with respect. It's brilliant, and there's so many moments where it's caught me off guard. Such as ISIC yelling my name in the middle of The Algorithm. Which resulted very much in 'oh, eff you, ISIC' as I'm easily startled. It was great, though. That's a brilliant joke to pull if you can get it right.
Ultimately, Battleborn is clever, and Gearbox thinks I'm clever enough to appreciate their clever. Thanks Gearbox!
Now, I could either have a game that's so diverse, characterful, charismatic, and has more of an identity and a personality than so many others from this year or however many prior... Or instead I could play Street Fighter II with guns and far less diversity. I feel that Battleborn is as intelligent and respectful as Overwatch is air-headed and patronising.
