I base it on the kid's looks (original legends of Thor had him as a fair-skinned redhead with blue eyes), and the concept that such a finale would be rather fitting (original trilogy ended with Kratos killing his father, new game/series ends with him facing down and killing the child he/the player raised into a man.
Besides, Odin was a dick in the old legends (and knew the future), and pulling a reveal like that fits his character. After all, the only thing that might keep the Norse Gods alive from an insatiable killer is forcing that killer to repeat an event that plagued him with nightmares and nearly destroyed his soul.
It also fits with the writing style of Santa Monica Studios
