I applied paste once when I was building my desktop and it still works great 5 years later
Laptop needed replacement thermal paste after the stock one dried out...after 6 years
So why every year?

Pretty much all the same shit. Might get a couple degrees cooler with better paste, and since it's so cheap people often just throw it into their build order because why the fuck not. That said, I wouldn't go out of my way to get it.
