It's like Oblivion but sometimes worse, sometimes better. If you dislike Oblivion and Skyrim you probably will also dislike Morrowind. Keep in mind that it's the same old Bethesda and the same old engine. Just cause it's older and isn't as simplified doesn't mean it's necessarily good.

Nigger what? Vanilla Morrowind's easily the most exploitable game of them all, let alone if you get the X-pacs. It's ridiculously easy to get ludicruously rich at the beginning of the game and then just go mowing down everything in your sight.

It's absolutely NOTHING like Oblivion or Skyrim, actually. Both mechanically and narrative wise it's drastically different.
It's a HELL of a lot more clunky than Oblivion, mostly due to the actually primarily stat-driven combat, in general it has drastically higher emphasis on character-building, worldbuilding and exploration, where is Oblivion is based on direct-control combat (where stats play only the role of secondary passive modifiers), big setpieces driven story and highly scripted tightly directed quests, where the actual world building and exploration barely qualify as afterthought.

The bethesda that made Oblivion and the Bethesda that made Morrowind are two ENTIRELY different beast with entirely different design philosophy, values, priorities, focus, imagination and talent.

I was more thinking of the regular game.

Like, you can't fast travel, you can fuck up leveling quite easy, you can fail quests, you can get stuck on quests, you have to read and interpret what people tell you, you have to look at landmarks, you have to get an understanding of your skills and how it affects the game, and getting to that point where you can properly exploit stuff takes time and effort unless you read up on everything.

Like comparatively when you play Skyrim you are sort of in a trance since nothing you do really require you to pay attention. While in Morrowind generally if you stop paying attention you will get stuck fast as fuck.

Actually, the only thing they really share is the fact that they are open world and that they have the increase skill by doing X. That is literally it. They are FUNDAMENTALLY different in virtually every other aspect.

You will not like them and thing they are alike if you are a completely, utterly and absolutely unobservant moron who literally can't see what's right in his face. You are claiming that they are the same because you need to retroactively justify the fact that you did not like them (and the fact that you quite literally did not "get" any of them as in you are blind to what you are playing).

Anybody who actually pays attention to games instead of making excuses for themselves can and will tell you that you don't have the faintest fucking clue what you are talking about.

melee in mw is definitely far more enjoyable than melee in oblivion and skyrim - at least things die

problem is that when i roll anything to do with melee i find that i end up with something like the fang of haynek-whatever, an amulet enchanted to paralyze target, and carpal tunnel in my pointer finger from spamming mouse1 so hard.

"At the base level" you mean "genre", right? Because they are really very different at their core mechanics.
Oblivion, Fallout 3, Skyrim and Fallout 4 are extremely similar at the base level. Morrowind is VERY much unlike those. The only thing they share is really the free-roam approach to adventure.

I'm not sure how you find it hard to take, but here's a list of things that TES3-5 and Fallout3-NV share: Bad art and art direction, especially animation. Shallow combat. Lots of bugs and technical flaws. Lack of choice. Writing that range from "alright" to "would get bad reviews on fan-fiction.net". Bad pacing. Overall feel very unpolished and for lack of a better word, janky.

Yes, all of those games are "janky". Because all of them are large open worlds, and in case of Morrowind and New Vegas, actually extremely rich open world with huge amount of systems and mechanics and content, which unsuprisingly means they are not going to be as polished as a fucking corridor shooter.

"Being unpolished" is not a design philosophy. Vietcong and Kerbal Space Program were both unpolished and buggy as fuck at the time of launch but that does not make them anything alike you fucking idiot.

I wanted to clarify that the games had both bad art direction (overall decisions about how assets should be designed and styled) and bad art (the actual assets-- models, textures, shaders, etc) because while the games have bad art direction, their artists are so hideously bad that they manage to underscore their own bad art style. Does that make sense? I mean it's insulting shitty. "Very bad."
