What voice chat program do you use while gaming with buddies and why is Discord the best option?
>>
>dicksucc
even teamshit is better than that
>>
>>342206350
No it's not.
>>
I have never used a voice chat program
>>
>>342206496
Do you not have friends or are you autistic? What do you use then? Are you 12?
>>
>>342206679
>Are you 12?
No, and that's why I have never used a voice chat program.
>>
>>342205971
Mumble because it has more features relating to actual voice options and literally no fluff. Discord has too much fluff and a shit UI and its only advantage over mumble is that it has a persistent text chat.
>>
>>342206679
I've managed fine with text chat since I first tried Quake deathmatch in the 90s. I stay in contact with my friends through IRC
>>
I talk to my buddies in the same room.
Do you not room with your best mates?
>>
>>342206767
So do you use in game voice chat? How do you communicate with your friends?

>>
Does it have a standalone client yet or is it still browser based?
>>
I have enough real life friends that I dont need to add random people on the internet. When I feel like playing multiplayer I just set up a party with friends and they all come over to play

I have 131 friends on my steam friends list. Every one of them I know in real life.
>>
>>342205971
Discord is a newfag meme, get in the guild Vent newbie, your class is one of only two that have a shortcut strat on the next boss fight and we want to go over it with you.
>>

>that's it

You are holding back progress by sticking with older software. Discord's voice quality is fantastic, and the weird networking peer-to-peer spoofing shit that it does makes it really easy to connect to/make your own server. It can also run on your phone.
>>
There is literally no reason to use anything other than Mumble.
>>
TeamSpeak is best. Setup your own server or if you're incapable just get a free one from enigmagaming.co.uk or somewhere
>>
>>342207057

>>
>>342207329
Discord's voice codecs make it sound like you're talking through a tin can connected to a string.
>>
>>342207343
Mumble is for faggots. That's enough reason to stay away from it.
>>
Literally no reason to switch from the Vent/TS/Mumble trinity
>>
>>342207414
yeah if the owner set the audio kbps to shit, you can set that you know.
>>
Skype.
Even if it becomes shit with 6+ people.
>>
>>342205971
Well let's see.
- Not free software
- Sells your data
- Plans to sell cancerous "emojis" as microtransactions
- Runs as web browser wrapper with the web page written in JavaScript, and sometimes has JS errors that freeze up the program
- Discord admins have the privilege to kick you, kill your server, ban you, etc. for no stated reason and no forgiveness
- Highly centralized, taking power from users and running everything on their website

guess what. It sucks dick.
>>
>>342207414
I'll wait while you get some sources on those claims. I use very nice headphones and everybody's voice is crystal clear, no "tin can" shit. Either way, the networking headaches that I went through with TeamSpeak and Vent are not present with Discord. I live in Canada, and we have some of the worst internet connections on Earth. So even if what you're saying is valid, it's likely the reason that Discord doesn't steal all of my bandwidth.
>>
>>342207436
Sounds more like Discord to me. Which is also worse than Mumble in every way.

I've used every VOIP program that people have mentioned in this thread and a couple more and Mumble blows everything else out of the water. Its sound quality is adjustable and on-par with or better than all other programs, its UI is better than all others, its functionality is better, and it's the least bloated of everything people frequently use. The only reason anyone uses any other program is because of peer pressure.
>>

So, as someone who uses Discord and is legit curious, what makes mumble and teamspeak "better"? At this point, what is it besides preference? I always see the usual "shit sound quality and bloatware" but I have yet to see those actual numbers. I'm using it right now talking to some people, and saying that the quality is shit baffles me because I can hear right now that it isn't shit.

>>
>>342208168
As someone who uses Discord and Mumble, Mumble does everything Discord does, uses less resources, has a better UI, has the same voice quality, and it has a lot more options for configuring it than Discord does. The only advantage Discord has at all is the social networking features, which I don't really care about in a VOIP program. I just want to use it to talk to friends, which Mumble does better and more simply while still having more features and similar quality.

The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor (freedom 2).
The freedom to distribute copies of your modified versions to others (freedom 3). By doing this you can give the whole community a chance to benefit from your changes. Access to the source code is a precondition for this."

>>342208162
First of all, why does my acknowledgement that a program compromises my personal opinions change anything? When I use the program, it does not respect my rights as the user and rather takes them away. This is never good. Also yes it is highly centralized because you'll see in a program like TOX it has all of the essential things of Discord, yet it is peer-to-peer only. This means it gives the users absolute control and prevents interference from administrators.
Also getting to the admin point, there have already been documented abuses recorded on the internet, all you need to do is Google it. You'll also notice that them being allowed to terminate your service for no reason is not only tyrannical, but also means that if they disagree with you they can silence you. I'm sorry that you don't think that these deeply concerning issues make the program less user-friendly, but I do, so I can make the choice with my own free will to NOT use it.
>>
>>342208146
Skype is slow, unresponsive and buggy. We used Skype extensively until we switched to Discord because Microsoft updates literally destroyed it. You can't even reliably start a group conversation now.

I did only barely dabble in mumble for a bit, a week or two, my biggest issue was my network REFUSED for me to set up a server. I have no fucking idea why, but I have to give ease of use to Discord at least. I'm by no means calling Mumble bad, because I barely used it, but my normie friends enjoy the ease of Discord.

Discord is actually good but the amount of shilling is annoying.

You're just shitting on Discord at this point by attacking people for using other VC programs you fucking retards.
>>
>>342208498
UI is subjective. Discord looks better to my eye.
As for ease of use, Discord is clear winner. You don't even have to install it to use it.
>>
>>342208560
Not that anon, but the few times I used Tox, the voice quality was ass compared to discord. This isn't a bias, and I'm not sure if it was my connection at the time, but it was the only time me and my friends said it sounded worse.
>>
>>342208871
Once again, it sort of sucks but you can expect it to be worse because it's peer-to-peer and encrypted. If you want voice quality, you could try Ventrillo because it's already been reverse-engineered and has third party open source programs that use the protocol without hindering the user's freedoms.
>>
>>342208613
Yes, sure, but it's not as good at VOIP as Mumble is, and I just want a VOIP client. I already have to use Steam and it has all the social networking bullshit that I don't care about anyway if I ever want to use all that.

As an example: If I want to test my sensitivity threshold for voice activity mode in Discord, I need another person. In Mumble, there is a volume bar showing you what you're brodcasting while you configure the thresholds, meaning you can do it manually.
Another example: Discord doesn't let me suppress my keybinds. It also has less options for keybinds than Mumble does.

>>342208824
Mumble's UI is objectively better as it is more simple. It takes less clicks to navigate than Discord and everything is laid out in standardized ways. You may prefer Discord's special snowflake "just throw that wherever" UI design, but it does not hold up to basic tenets of UI design. I will agree with you that Discord looks better, but I don't care how my VOIP program looks - I don't sit there staring at it most of the time. As for ease of use, see above - Discord lacks features compared to Mumble. Not installing it is irrelevant because you'd have to be a retard to use a browser to VOIP due to the much higher overhead.
>>
>>342205971
im sure im late but id just like to say Vent, raidcall and mumble are all fucking dogshit

>mfw Xfire finally died
>mfw Discord will never be as comfy
It's just too fucking bulky of a program. Not in terms of memory, but design. You can't do separate windows, everything it built into the main one and you have to have it take up more than half your screen to be able to properly use it.

That being said, I've used Mumble, TeamSpeak, Skype, Steam and even fucking C3, and none of them are as good as Discord in my experience.
>>
>>342209130
>but it does not hold up to basic tenets of UI design.
Elaborate please?

>As for ease of use, see above - Discord lacks features compared to Mumble.
The only thing it lacks as I see it is the ability for people to run own servers. Again, elaborate?

>Not installing it is irrelevant because you'd have to be a retard to use a browser to VOIP due to the much higher overhead.
Or maybe you just met someone in-game and want to let him join your chat without having to install some third party software?

>due to the much higher overhead.
Except, you know, Discord uses a browser engine internally so it's exactly the same overhead.
Is it worth it?
For the ease of use it provides, I'd say yes.
>>
>>342205971
I doubt its the best option, but its good enough for me and my people as we only play for fun, not serious shit like ARMA 3 and that kind of stuff.

Also the chat is pretty decent.

paranoid of what? I just don't want a program selling anything related to me without giving me a share. Therefore I am making them money for free--something which I don't want to do.
Also, what makes me intolerant? If anything, discord is intolerant because it does not value the rights of the individual.

I never got this. The purpose of the program is for voice chat. Unless you're playing with like 30 people and want to see who's chatting, I'm pretty sure you'll keep the program minimized because you recognize the voices within your group of 2-6 faggots (I'm being generous).

>>
>>342209402
>Elaborate please?
>The only thing it lacks as I see it is the ability for people to run own servers. Again, elaborate?
I elaborated in my post. Read it.
>Except, you know, Discord uses a browser engine internally so it's exactly the same overhead.
Discord uses less RAM than Firefox or Chrome with only a single blank tab open. Do you not know what overhead means?
>For the ease of use it provides, I'd say yes.
Yes, sure, I suppose that would be the case if you don't play vidoegames while in a VOIP session but considering Discord is designed around that very thing, that seems a bit foolish when downloading the program takes very little space and makes it easier to use (by providing a more clean UI and taking slightly less time to startup).
Again, the only things Discord does over Mumble is social networking features. If you like those, then more power to you, but don't pretend it's better than Mumble in any way.
You're still not doing anything to disprove my main point, that is, that Mumble is better for VOIP than Discord. You can't, since that would be tantamount to saying a cellphone's flashlight is better than a proper torch.
>>342209672
UI isn't much of an issue but the few times you do need to navigate to change or view settings, it's much easier to do so in Mumble than in Discord.

That's not a VOIP feature. That's a social networking feature.

If he doesn't want to download a very small and non-resource-intensive program to talk with people then he likely doesn't care enough to make a Discord account.
>>
>>342210249
TS3 is my favorite VOIP tool as well. Mumble isn't really worse but I personally dont like it. Ventrilo hasn't been updated in years and would deseperately need it because the features that set it apart from TS2 back then are no reason to use it noy anymore.

Its a worse slack with poor voip
>>
>>342211090
You don't need a Discord account to use Discord.
It's not a social networking feature.
It's literally a VOIP feature. You can use VOIP without installing any software or registering.
>>
>discord shills blatantly advertising their bloatware on 4chan

why is this allowed?
>>
>>342211250
Yes, its a social networking program that also does VOIP, not a VOIP program.
>>342211281
You need an account to add friends or to save servers and the like (I'm not that sure about the last one, but I'm sure about the first one) which is the entire point of the program so yes, you don't have to make an account or download anything. In fact, you don't have to use it at all, since Mumble is better and you already have Steam if you want text chat or networking (through groups).

>>
>>342211281
Also, what does having an account or not have to do with my post? Name a single VOIP feature Discord does better. Social networking bullshit is irrelevant bloat and is the exact reason why Discord isn't as good as Mumble.

This

I downloaded it because my boyfriend wants to use it when we do lewd things. I use mumble for actual voice chat. Discord is too unfocused.
>>
>>342211391
The point of the program is voice chat. You literally follow one link, type in username, and you can do voice chat. No other VOIP software lets you do that.

>>342211487
>Also, what does having an account or not have to do with my post?

That's not a VOIP feature, again. That's a social networking feature. No sane person is going to only use the browser version of Discord to do actual voice chat so inevitably they will download it. It being easier to add randoms to is a social networking feature, that has NOTHING to do with actual VOIP sessions. You seem to be missing the point here - the whole social aspect of Discord is not worth giving up the plethora of features, efficiency, and superiority of Mumble as a VOIP program.
>honestly can't tell at this point if trolling or that stupid
Did you not read my post? You attacked my point about making an account rather than attempting to make any point other than "Discord is superior because joining a session for the very first time takes 30 seconds less" which still isn't relevant to my point - that Mumble is superior for VOIP.

Discord seemed to pop up out of nowhere, not sure why it is so popular. Teamspeak is far more widely used for vidya and Skype is just easy as fuck to put on your phone and computer. It isn't about being a dumb cunt it's just that why would you have all these other VOIP progams instead of having teamspeak and skype. Pretty much everyone has the two programs and getting people to use shit like mumble, ventrilo and discord is only really a niche.
