The pacing was shit, causing them to jump all over the place with the plot. The human actors/garona were... well, I don't know much about judging actors, so either they or the directing were shit.
The very basics of the plot sort of follow WC1, well enough that you really shouldn't have been confused at all if you knew what was supposed to happen. Baffled at what they changed, maybe, but not that confused.
Overall the movie's plot is why you don't let Metzen take liberties, though.

I have never played any Warcraft or WoW games. My biggest exposure to the universe is through Hearthstone. I had no trouble understanding the basic concepts of the movie - I wasn't confused by the magic or the setting or anything.
The movie just sucks because the pacing and writing is fucking trash. None of the plot points are set up with proper foreshadowing or exposition. None of the characters have moments that actually characterize them and let the audience understand their mindset and motivations, except Gul'dan who's just cartoonishly evil.
The reason only Warcraft players like this movie isn't because they can understand it better, it's just because they're excited to see references they know on the screen. It's just badly constructed fanservice.

In lord of the clans it's implied that the fel corruption got most of the orcs regardless of if they drank the blood or not. Rise of the horde has a bit about Durotar's skin turning green slowly too. the humans have to flee to lordaeron and that's the end of wc1
in wc2 the orcs, under orgrim doomhammer, push the humans back to lordaeron and almost win, when gul'dan abandons the fight, so the humans win and imprison the orcs
they haven't even attacked stormwind in the movie, so we are not even at the end of wc1
they ally with the forest trolls in wc2, and I think that's also when gul'dan creates his death knights and ogre mages
though ogres in general were already in wc1 I think
