Has anyone used a Gear VR yet? How is it? Anything worthwhile about it?

I got one for Christmas.

It's really nifty. There was a lot they had built into the Oculus app that I could wow my family with. I can, and have, spent a happy hour just looking at the immersive pictures in the fucking photo gallery that comes with it. Needless to say, it's also a few times cheaper than shilling for a Rift.

The downsides are, and I think this is an exhaustive list:

- Sucks battery life like a florida whore. To remedy this, there's an external charging port that then routes through the port between the Gear and the phone, just plug your charger into that. Even so,
- The phone tends to heat up severely after about 20-30 minutes of normal use. The app will notify you when it starts to overheat, and recommend you take a short break. Try to use it without the front cover to help cooling.
- If you get motion sick easily (like half my family did) then you'll hate it. Games with movement tend to aggravate this.
- VR apps are a little more expensive than normal ones (~$4).
- The Gear's external controls (the touchscreen is obscured, duh) are a little clunky.

That's about it. A lot of these flaws are limitations of the product's form factor and price, so I'm not complaining. It's meant to hype people up about the Rift. If you can get it for $50-60 on sale, why not?
>>
Can you use the camera for AR?

Thanks for the non-meme response. I am interested in trying VR, but I don't know anyone with an Oculus/Vive and no stores seem to offer demos for any of the headsets.
Have you used Oculus/Vive? How does it compare to Gear VR games/experiences?
And most imporantly is there good porn apps for gear vr
>>
I got one with my S7. It's okay, seems pretty blurry around the peripheral even with adjusting the focus. VR Porn is awesome though.
>>
>>342198539
Also which phone do you use with it? Is the smaller 5.1 inch S6 okay with it?
>>
>>342198724
VR Porn is the only thing worth messing around with.
>>
can you even use non oculus app programs with this? it boots into it automatically and you cant close it, if not whats the point, theirs like 15 total apps on the oculus home.

I got one coming slowly from buying an S7 Edge with a promo in Aus, I get a Gear VR for free.
Still waiting on it but monitoring thread and keen as fuck to try VR Porn

There's shitty phone VR, and good VR.

Gear VR is one of the shitty ones, OP.
>>
>>342198847
on a phone hmd, sure
I mean I can't imagine there to be any intuitive games on just a phone without any controls
>>
It's only good for VR Porn currently. It's the best "price-performance" for VR porn, so to speak.

Cardboard is the cheapest, but some phones have horrible tracking issues plus the fact you have cardboard on your face.

Unless you want to spend money on a controller to play games, I would say GearVR games are not worth your time or money.
>>
Not OP, but also curious.I have a google cardboard, will this provide a drastic change in perspective for VR?
>>
>>342199169
If you really just want to dip your toes in VR because you've never tired it, get cardboard. Then save up for an actual headset.
>>
>>342197649
Interesting, but they didn't put any effort into making the thing comfortable. The part that protects your face from the main unit is cheap and worthless. Would have been a whole lot better with at least some soft plastic instead of the crap that is on it.

I imagine a lot of VR units will have a problem with comfort. Especially cheap things like this.

Thanks dude! My uni's CSC club had a dev kit, I tried E:D on it for about 10 minutes. The Gear's resolution seems a little worse, but not so much that they were in different classes. Again, the biggest difference for me is the short time before overheating.

>>342198539
I have the S6, it's good. I've also tried it with my speshul friend's S5. I think the Gear detects your screen size by detecting what combination of rubber stops are pressed down when the phone is clicked in.

ALL YOU NEED IS UNITY-CHAN OK

>Games

fuck games I want that shit to work with Ableton/Logic/Audio hardware

Not into this lame as shit implementation of the technology.

I mean, for fucks sake... video games? Give me a break dude. Games are shit in his era. Caprica like socialization or bust.
>>
>>342199343
Not really. Not worth extra money.

Better tracking for sure, but that's about it. Save up for an actual headset.
>>
>>342199343
>I'm not really buying into this VR thing
>Maybe the lowest tier option will change my mind
Sorry to say, think again anon. VR is pretty slick, though in its infancy. I wouldn't invest though I hope it does well and advances quickly. Best bet is to go to a con some time and try a demo
>>
>>342198632
Yeah, that's why you see so many pics of people wearing the Gear around town.
>>
>>342199481
Oh! also what that Anon said. The bridge of your nose will have red marks unless the top headstrap fits you well (it didn't fit me).
>>
>>342199483
Oh sorry the middle part was for
>>342198823
>>
>>342199551
You're on the video games board, but even I understand my argument doesn't hold water...
>>
>>342198948
There's SideloadVR which has a bunch of free apps not on the Oculus store yet. There's also an app that let's you use Google Cardboard apps.
>>
I have one. It fogs up a lot because I guess I am one sweaty motherfucker.
Gimmick is kinda neat though. I use it to watch 3D movies sometimes.
>>
>>342199814
>3d movies
HOW?
WHAT SOFTWARE?
>>
>>342197649
Do you need a phablet sized phone to use it, or is a 5" screen like the Galaxy S4 big enough?
>>
>>342199752
We're talking about the tech, and right now it's all around gay as fuck.
>>
>>342200171
What do you mean?
VR in general? Or are you just upset that the resolution is low and graphics have to be simplified?
>>
>>342200345
>VR in general

To be clear, I like VR/AR, but nothing being presented thus far is what I want to use it for.
>>
My friends had one hooked up at a LAN party last week and this is what i took from my experience:
Headsets are really comfortable, its hard to fit over your head sometimes if you have a giant head of hair like I do but a few adjustments fix that. The controls are simple and it takes a bit getting used to. The games are really neat but from what I've played they're more about showcasing the abilities of VR than they are actual games, so if you don't mind waiting a while for more fleshed out games then you should be fine. All in all its a really cool experience and its worth the investment in my opinion. I can't wait for the playstation VR to come out so I can play glorious star wars in virtual reality. If you have the cash get one but get a good one.
>>
>>342200512
What do you want to use it for?
>>
>>342200117
Well I just read one thing saying the Galaxy S6 is the best one to use for it right now due to pixels being more pronounced on the other phones. The S6 is 5.1". The problem with your S4 is that it might not be powerful enough to run at a decent fps, or it might have other issues.
>>
>>342200740
Yeah, I figured it probably wouldn't be worth bothering with until I get a bigger, better phone, which might not be for a while because I really don't need a better phone right now.
