It involved animals just like Pokémon or Sonic or Animal Crossing or whatever else does. Nothing to do with them – don't even think it's referenced in the game from what I can tell.

Well I was just memeing, but now that I've actually looked up the game I'd say it looks alright. Haven't even heard of it until now.

The Kickstarter/announce trailer from way back when is really fucking good. Music is especially incredible.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8109dIuc-bo

It was at E3 this year (as well as two years ago) and it's coming out this fall. Got to play it – finally – and just fell in love.

There's two free bonus mini/supplemental games available currently, one of which is called "Lost Constellation" and got pretty favorable reviews/things said about it last year when it came out, if you're interested in that. Stellar writing too.

>>
>>342195276
It's not like Gone Home or Dear Esther or anything like that. From what I can tell it's an adventure game with platforming elements and a focus on narrative/story/characters. Yeah, you walk in it – does that make CoD or Overwatch a "walking simulator" too because you walk in that as well, or a "gun simulator," etc.? Nice meme though.

I'm not that guy but "walking simulator" refers to a game where there is no test of skill or risk of losing. You "walk" in pretty much every single game ever made.

The Stanley Parable, for instance, is a walking simulator. Despite having a good story, all you do is walk and listen. That appears to be what you do in this. It doesn't make sense to call it a "game" because you can't lose.
>>
>>342197045
>all you do is walk and listen

Right, same with in Pokémon. What distinguishes those from an RPG then? Sure, you can lose in battle, but you don't lose the game/your progress/etc.

And why says you need to be able to "lose" in a game anyway? Like, where is the definition that states that? Just curious.
>>
Yeah, it's a walking simulator. At least own up to it, man.
Walking simulators can be neat if they have a nice story and music. Hell, even undertale was close to just being a walking simulator and I had a good time with it.
But when you refuse to admit what it is, it makes it seem like you're trying to deceive us.
>>
>>342198386
I mean, there's ways for you to "lose" or die in the game's mini-challenges/games, just like in battles in Pokémon. Apart from that sure, it is, even though it's a dumb term just because it's so broad and not descriptive of what people are actually trying to say.

I'm all for the story and music though.
>>
>>342198386
>undertale was close to just being a walking simulator
that's an RPG anon
>>
>>342198647
I said it was close. How many times did you ever die? Did you ever really get challenged on any of the normal enemies?
>>
>>342198710
I'm not the best at bullet hells, so more than a few. Only to bosses and such though iirc. Wasn't really challenged by any of the normal enemies, no, but that's some arbitrary question you're asking. Undertale is heavy on narrative anyway.

If you're doing genocide, probably a fuckton, especially to Sans.
>>
>>342199057
My point is that the "game" part of that game is very light. I'm just justifying saying that undertale was coming close to being a walking simulator.
If you entirely removed combat the experience wouldn't be too different. Hell, the pacifist run would be exactly the same.
>>
>>342199289
How do you define the "game" part of a game? Like, the bullet hell parts? Talking to characters is a game as well. Again with Pokémon – the conversations with NPCs are as a part of the game as the battles are.

It wouldn't be the same, because the gameplay and narrative are so intertwined, especially in that game. You seriously think the pacifist run in Undertale would be 100% the same without any of the battles? Hell, that's what makes it a PACIFIST RUN – it couldn't be called that WITHOUT those. They're fundamental to the entire game – just as you said, the "game" (or the more traditionally "gamey") part.
>>
>>342199578
Do you smell your own farts? lmao
>>
Cool art style, glorious pacific northwest setting

>indie game and therefore most likely no longer than ~5 hours
>on top of that, it is mostly a walking sim
>>
>>342199578
Well the battles are the interactive part, unless you count choosing who to listen to as interactive.

I said "close!" haha. I'm not trying to classify it strictly as a walking simulator, I'm just trying to say that those types of games are not necessarily bad.
>>
>>342199678
Do you?
>>
>>342199712
One of his last games was around 26 hours and that spent much less time in development.

Hell, I played the demo at E3 for 1.5 hours, and that's definitely less than half of the game, probably close to a quarter or less.

Fair. Still not the best term imo, but I agree.

Are you the dev or something? If so you're gonna have to sell me harder than that, the music is definitively gorgeous after looking at those links I'm liking what I hear, but I really can't be bothered by a story driven game that removes gameplay entirely. I mean Limbo had great platforming and puzzle elements to it so what does this game offer apart from a good story?

no, just been following the game for a number of years and excited for its release.

there's a video polygon did on it from the e3 demo (it's not the first 30 minutes though, so wrong title, and they don't complete the full demo and miss a lot of stuff, e.g. didn't explore full upper part of city through jumping on powerlines etc.)

>what does this game offer apart from a good story
Not him, but how many "components" does a game have to offer?

Limbo is a platformer. This is story-driven as far as I can tell. Games usually blend aspects from lots of genres but still mainly fall into one category.

I don't even know how I would categorize this to tell you the truth, especially considering I haven't played it and don't know anything about gameplay or story beyond the ~1 hour from near the beginning. Doesn't really matter though since it seems I'll enjoy it

I wasn't interested in the game and there's nothing that turns me off more than shilling. I'd think that most people would feel that way but viral marketing is obviously effective. It just doesn't make me want to play a game when I read a post that sounds like an old jewish business man typed out.

If it's a story driven game and the gameplay is "just a way to be able to get you access to more story/adventure elements" then it's literally filler.

Filler is defined by how it doesn't serve a purpose to the story whatsoever.

If the gameplay doesn't serve a purpose in the story then it's filler.

But if that's the case, this is what that tells me about the dev: They're exploiting the popularity of videogames instead of working in an artistic medium that would allow them to tell a story without gameplay.

Lost interest. I'm not going to take you seriously if you don't take this artistic medium seriously. This obviously isn't a Core-Game, it can't get away with the excuse "it's fun" when selling it. I'm not going to be all autismo on you and argue about what the definition of a game is, but in the same way that a picture with no subtext (ie; a men's bathroom sign) wouldn't typically be considered art, a "game" with no fail-state (no challenge) wouldn't be considered a game. I would call it a visual novel myself, but walking simulator is the more commonly used epithet.

Looks like there are many definitions, anon.

A painting of a men's bathroom sign IS art though. If Da Vinci or someone famous painted it, it certainly would be - and we'd probably assign some fake meaning to it.

Visual novels is a term used exclusively for Japanese games in my experience.
