Doom had a lot of depth for a FPS imo.

>glory kills give you health
>chainsaw is insta kill and gives you ammo
>bfg is room clearer
>chainsaw/bfg ammo is quite limited

It made it so when presented with tougher enemies you had to sort of weight the pros and cons of going for a standard glory kill, using/wasting a chainsaw for ammo, or just doing a room clear so you can breath for a second.
>>
>>342193392
Its to encourage you to use a variety of weapons, and a way to give you powerful weapons early but limit amount of use you could do with it.
>>
>Reloading a gun
>cancel out the animation right as you load in the ammunition
>it completes the reload and you don't have to do the whole animation all over again
This should be fucking standard but there are so many goddamn shooters that force you to sit through the agonizing routine and god forbid you do something that stops it cause all that time wasted was for nothing now.

Its not about the mechanic being hard. Active reloading was a great mechanic because it
1. Encouraged wasting ammo and timing a reload to take the advantage
2. Reloading perfectly to strike back
3. The character voice line that happened when you did it in order to put pressure or tell your opponent to fuck off.
>>
>>342195617

Although its not fair to name fighting games/action games as the good ones of each roughly derive all of their depth from mechanics outside of the basic fundamentals.

Most arena shooters have alot of mechanics with depth. Hell i might get hate for this but D44Ms MP has some depth in my book because of the ledge climbing being so fast and fluid.

How so? The reload rate is faster then most shooters and if you don't wanna react the standard ammo reload is impossible to miss. The active exists purely as a bonus in the heat of a match for a clenching move.

You sound like a real fucking idiot to say that like reloading is any faster in most games.

Because not only was the thought of active reloading cool as fuck because it gave you extra damage, the fact that failing jammed your weapon and your character audibly became angry because of how good the immersion factor was that whoever you were playing as became worried for their life for just a moment that they couldn't be shooting at the locust because their gun jammed is an amazing concept that is horrendously underused in shooters

It's a pretty damn small novelty, but for some reason it felt so satisfying, especially in the sense of urgency of trying to maintain a combo.

Fuck, I miss that shit, where does the time go. Ultimate edition was okay, I felt a bit of nostalgia playing it at least, it felt a bit like the original, more than I was expecting, though not an insane amount. Unfortunately I haven't played the MP yet, since I can only freeload off my sister and her Xbone for so long. Adding the PC chapters was cool too, they were alright, nothing to write home about, although the brumak fight was kind of cool.

I had a little more trouble there than I did in the original as well actually, they might have improved the AI a bit, admittedly I was only playing on normal since my sister had already started the campaign but I had more trouble there this time around for sure. MY buddy and I used to do that chapter on insane with nothing but chainsaws, it was actually pretty easy since therons took forever to kill on insane otherwise, I tried that a couple times on UE and it didnt go over very well, though I still cut a couple of the fuckers up. I do prefer the graphics of the original, technically they arent as good, and UE definitely improved some things, and the new gnasher sounds fucking sexy, but it lost a lot of the grit of the original game, it's a bit too bright and clean, especially the character's faces. It lost a decent chunk of the atmosphere, though I wouldn't go so far as to say all of it, fortunately.

Time your torque bow shots to right before his kryll shield returns, if you time it right, and it isnt hard, you can hit him in the face with an arrow and have the explosion not only damage him but also scare the kryll away again, so you can unload all 2 shots in his face unobstructed. Once youre out of ammo, just blind throw grenade spam him from over the cover, and if he still isnt dead, keep on the opposite side of the cover as he is and just lancer blindfire shoot him until he dies.

Ive completed all 3 games solo on insane, Gears 1 gave me far more trouble than any of the other games, though the final boss on Gears 3 was admittedly a pain in the ass. Hardest part of beating the original game on insane, at least for me doing it solo, was actually the part at the end of act 4 where you have to defend the front of the house. Act 1 and most of act 2 are pretty tame EXCEPT FOR THE FUCKING APC LEVEL HOLY SHIT THAT'S HARD TO DO ON YOUR OWN, ON ANY DIFFICULTY and then act 3 is pretty okay as well, except for the parts where you have to ride the minecarts THE TRAINS AT HOME ON THE RAILS, where they throw you into a pit with a solid dozen dark wretches in the mines, and where you and Dom are on separate paths in the mines and are totally exposed to fire from the other path, which I would say is probably the hardest part in the game to do co-op, especially since you can't revive your friend. Act 4 is definitely the hardest act in the first game, act 5 is pretty straightforward, though admittedly I havent got the chance to play UE on insane yet so I dont know how the new chapters will be, although they seem pretty straightforward, it's just the brumak fight I dont know about, though then again I expected Skorge to be hard too and he was a cakewalk on insane, the following level with the reaver was much harder, though it was mainly the intro with all the instant kill guns that's hard, the hydra fight isnt bad. RAAM was okay, not too easy but you're just kinda of numb by that point, but Dom is retarded, you jsut have to be fast as fuck with your torque bow shots, so you arent out of cover for too long.
>>
>>342212584

Gears 3 was a lot harder than 2, anywhere with an armoured kantus is immediately a bitch, all of act 5 was hard, but the single hardest part of that game was probably the fight at the end of act 4 with the two armoured kantuses and the serapedes at the same time, that took me forever, probably longer than anywhere else save the final boss. In general, all of the gimmick levels that mix of the gameplay get easier relative to the rest of the game as the difficulty increases, with the sole exception of the APC in the first game, and the first half of the reaver level in the second. Corpser fight was easy, Giant worm was easy, New Hope and the tank level was easy, Leviathan fight was easy, both the Gears 1 and 3 fights, Skorge was easy, brumak level was easy, and an easy way to farm seriously 2.0, and the submarine level was easy. The hardest part of Gears 2 was definitely going through Nexus, especially going through all the hall's in the castle at the end. The atmosphere and sense of scale in those levels was great though, seeing all those locust buildings with that giant cathedral in the centre, watching as you slowly get closer and closer to it, and then finally raiding the thing, which in itself took a long time to get to the bottom, all while the queen delivers cryptic PSA's about invading the surface.

You mean like a gun works?
The mechanic is ridiculously retarded and only implemented to give AHDS babies something to do during the boring reload sequences, then justifying this pandering with some in-game bonus, which makes no sense, and could have easily been avoided by not having to reload at all.
>>
>>342218632
Friend, if you mean to imply that either loading a firearm has no chance of going wrong (even if that only means dropping a shell or magazine), or that loading firearms isn't satisfying then maybe you should look into a new genre of games
>>
>>342211425

I thought all of Bloodborne's little additions were perfect ways to tweak the Souls formula

>regain health upon attacks, encouraging and rewarding aggression
>combo hits do more damage than regular hits, rewarding aggression and heightening the likelihood of clutch moments
>dodging actually covers a lot of ground in a short amount of time
>guns parries are cool and fun
>>
>>342190919
>getting countered during demon's dance

>>
except active reloading is a stupid feature that only encouraged people to shoot into a wall before attacking other players because they suck ass and need the tiniest bit of advantage they can get.

in gears 1, it actually broke the sniper rifle since it enabled people to get 1 shot downs by shooting people in the toes.

it's such a hated feature, they've removed it from the game multiple times in the past and everyone hates how they made it even easier in gears 4.
>>

Suddenly reminded me, what the hell was up with Vanquish's melee attacks that ate up your whole boost bar?
I adored the shit out of that game, beat it every which way around and just avoided that shitty move, past a stylish finisher on the last enemy. It's god damn suicide on the harder difficulties.
Also the saw blade gun being shit was dissapointing
>>
>>342221761
The only thing that bugged me a lot about Bloodborne is the inability to access your storage box or a at least a "lite" version of the messenger store via lamps. It would even make sense from an immersive perspective, as messengers crowd around the lamps anyway and could bring you stuff from the dream.
>>
>>342196495

>Also the saw blade gun being shit was dissapointing
funny you say that after complaining about melee moves

saw blade thrower is the only weapon in the game with melee that doesn't deplete energy

> melee attacks that ate up your whole boost bar?
who knows? balance maybe?

shotgun melee is chargeable and can dish out a lot of damage

the idea probably was to make melee only a desperation move or a satisfying finisher as you said

lots of outrightly weird gameplay decisions in that one
