Is VR the future of gaming, or is it just a gimmick that will die out soon?
>>
doa
>>
Facebook killed it before it even began.
>>
>>342177869
It's not a gimmick, but it's still not the right time for it. As long as you have to look like a fucking retard while playing it and it costs the price of a console to middle end pc, it won't be the right time for VR.
>>
What's the point of VR when all people are going to do is wave their e-penis in others faces over how intellectually superior they are for investing in a new piece of hardware?

It's like watching a bad interpretation of feminist literature on film.
>>
It's a meme, like motion controls
>>
orders are driving vr. VR has been around a long time but it simply wasn't good enough, until now.
>>
Thank god /v/ has finally come to their senses, I was saying this shit years ago when the rift was first announced and fucking no one agreed with me. It's just a fucking stupid gimmick like 3D and motion controls.
>>
>>342178250
I agree that the tech is finally there, but it's still too expensive and still too dumb looking.
>>
Give it 30 years or more
>>
>>342177869
>Joel (((Stein)))
>>
Personally I think it's a gimmick. Until they manage to figure out how to make it where the player can move within VR without using a controller or teleporting it's just a fancy way to view things. Right now all we have are tech demos that have the player point to where they want to move and teleport or just stand in one spot. Add to it a lack of actual games of any real note. All we have at the moment or mini-games you'd see on some of the Wii's early games.

It'll probably get better over time, but for the moment all it is is a fancy replacement for a television/monitor. And with the ridiculous cords, head set, and generally clunky technology I genuinely have to wonder how much better it can get in the end.
>>
Currently a meme.
PSVR is going to be the deciding factor.
If it fails, all the other PC headsets will fail too, even though PC is a lead platform.
If it succeeds on PS4, that means there's a normie market.

This. The concept was affordable VR that everyone could use to advance gaming and electronics. Facebook bought it, and instantly everyone lost all hope. Even "cheap" VR is too damn much.
>>
>>342178354

This doesn't matter at all.

I don't even think of this as virtual reality. VR is something that taps into your nervous system and literally puts you in the game.

Not the future of gaming. It's shit for video games. Future of VR is in applications like exploring tourist locations in detail or having a library of ebooks you can walk around in. Maybe casual smartphone-like games.

Reminds me of the early days of DAWs and FireWire interfaces in recording studios. People said the shit would never replace reel-to-reel, and at the time it wasn't very good.

There was horrid latency, it sounded weird, and required 10k$ sound cards for an interface. 15 years later you can buy a 24-input DAW and interface with beautiful preamps for like under a grand.
>>
>>342177869
Until we get to SAO tier vr, it ain't good.
>>
>>342178751
Well sure, but the fact that we're close to completely fooling the two most important senses should mean something to you. This is absolutely VR.

It's not a gimmick in the way motion controls were, but it's also really new and all of the software at the moment is tech-demo level.

If companies insist on slapping VR onto existing experiences, then it will become a gimmick. Games built from the ground-up for VR, like a lot of Vive titles, are really compelling even though they're mostly simply and sparse on content.
>>
>>342177869
It's the future, but not in this format. The goggles are too cumbersome, they're wired and need a lot of calibration to get going, room dimensions are also pretty important.

I think currently Google Glass is a lot closer to "being the future".
>>
>>342178665
>It's a gimmick. Greedy companies are on jumping in the VR bandwagon, hoping it'll be the "next revolution" so they can make a ton of cash on shit products. However, the greedy bastards and the VR industry in general is severely underestimating how little most people/gamers give a shit about VR. Not to mention the potential health risks of having a fucking screen strapped to your head and losing all awareness of your outside environment. (fixed a bit for ya mate)

Not to mention too the nausea and mind/body disconnect if you're not able to move your body in the real world as you are in the virtual, and the potential for ACTUAL issues with reality disconnect (will immersing oneself into a virtual environment as though it were real desensitize our minds to violence and other "bad things" in reality if we experience it in virtual reality?).

There was something else I was gonna add, but forgot.
>>

These headsets make you look cool as fuck. Normies are weird.
>>
Call me when they can send the consciousness into a virtually constructed space.

I've never understood the appeal of this shit. It's literally tiny screens in front of your eyes.
>>
>>342179038

also pornography. in games it will be only for the hard core people really, and I am fine with that.
>>
>>342179632

>violent video games are the devil
>>
>>342178616
So, all of the "pro-social" shit apparently boils down to "becoming a minority" and being beaten by your mentally ill husband AI every thirty minutes or something? Reminds me of how film and photography is constantly used to remind us of suffering children in Africa (while the photos are still left to be photos...?)

I am really getting the impression that all people know to do with art is impress as much pathetic humanitarian plight upon them as possible.
>>
>>342179365

Fuck building it from the ground up, more games just need a VR support option. Fallout 4 is the first game to actually do this: just give me head tracking and a full FOV screen, but allow me the traditional control scheme. That's all VR needs to go big.
>>
>>342178868
I'd agree if the idea of print magazine being relevant at all in 2015 wasn't a complete joke
>>
>>342179365
>it needs gimmick games built from the ground up to be gimmicky
thats exactly what it has right now and its fucking shit
>>
I have a VIVE and honestly movement is a problem in some games. Budget cuts does it right . Its a real non walking simulator game and its FUN. Oculus shills don't have room scale yet so I hope they enjoy turret segments. That being said elite dangerous is worth the price of vr admission.
>>
>>342179795
It doesn't work that way, that's the problem. Just letting the player look around from the character's head position is a good way to make the player sick and have the game not be fun. It's also mostly gimmicky, because you end up just playing the same game the same way, but with a screen strapped to your face. The best experiences so far have involved letting the player walk around, crouch or lie down or crawl or whatever else, and get their hands involved. At that point it very genuinely feels like you're in the game.
>>
>>342179939
I don't think you know what the word gimmick means.
>>
>>342180346
I stupid feature no one asked for nor wants. using dual dildos to play a walking simulator is exactly that
>>
>>342179939
This. The best fun I've had with VR was normal games with a normal controller or K/BM. All I want to do is play the same old genres like I've always played them but in VR.
I think if more people had tried it they'd want this too.
>>
>>342180346
This it's not a gimmick if it's a new genre. Was guitar hero a gimmick or a new genre? Also don't say anything about guitar freaks weeb. Vr games need to be different from traditional because it's about IMMERSION , it's not about strapping current games to your face
>>
>>342180527
guitar hero games were good and intuitive and didn't require dropping nearly a 1000 dollars at the entry-level

still waiting for my gear vr to try even

the porn is amazing even on my shitty phone but it gave me a headache. I love simulator games so I'm sure it will be awesome to feel like you're there

I'm just mad that doax3 will get a VR mode on psvr only. I hate the console exclusive shit. There's no way I'm getting a PC + vive/rift and a ps4 + psvr
>>
>>342180239

But how do you do that with a decent control scheme? Or have to run across a field of battle far larger than your room? I mean, people didn't have these problems in TF2 when the game officially supported Oculus DK1.
>>
>>342180790
I've done that with my favorite Trap doujins so I know how it is.

Cost isn't an argument against the whether the games are fun or compelling, though. The price will come down just like it has for every other new consumer technology.

Right now, I think you don't. It's one of the reasons "traditional" video games and VR games can coexist just fine. The games we like now were designed to be played a certain way, and that's fine. VR games have different possibilities as well as different restrictions, so the games themselves will be different.

Vr is nothing new, I've seen a VR craze in the 80's, another in the 90's, and the 2000s. Every time it was hyped to no end by the media and every time it became a monumental flop because it was too fucking expensive for the headgear and you needed a top notch PC to actually run the 3D. I predict this incarnation of the VR craze will follow in its predecessors footsteps, being a novelty for a few months before fading into obscurity.
>>
You know what sort of blows my mind is how my childhood fantasies have literally become reality this year.

29 year old oldfag here and back when I was like 10 my friends and I would play those clunky as fuck "VR" games at carnivals or special science museum events and shit where it was a massive fucking machine bigger than an xbox that you had to strap yourself onto just to view through some shitty goggles, but damn did it feel cool to be in "another" world, even if it was virtua fighter tier graphics.

And now this is it...VR is in your home, you can strap that shit on at any time and play VR games and look at tons of furry porn

What a time to be alive.
>>
>>342181918
lol no

with google daydream, billions of people will have VR machines pretty soon
>>
>>>>342181918
Implying any prior VR has been anything like this level of hype, investment , or support. A few hmds in the 2000s doesn't equal valve and fucking Facebook throwing all their weight behind vr tech.
>>
>>342181918

Oculus is already being given for free with S7s, so price / hardware isn't an issue this time around (I mean, the shit's being run on a fucking cellphone).

You're probably right about it just being a novelty at the moment, though. I really hope the future of VR is invested into heavily, though; I would very much like to be hooked to perma-VR once I get old enough to go to a nursing home.

It's never gonna fully replace being able to see your character on the screen. It'll definitely dominate 1st person games, though. VR can only enhance those games.

honestly i think VR in its idealized form will never come to fruition (eg being able to move around without having to teleport). it's all just too complicated. the only conceivable way i can think of is if the industry gets together with some neurobiologists and they create something that induces lucid dreaming and go from there.

But I guess I'll be surprised. We'll have to wait and see.

Well there's a lot of hurdles to getting there, firstly you would need artists and programmers who would take the time to develop it, secondly you would have to get around the legal loopholes with "Not-Characters", which could potentially work with a "furry maker" but that's a lot of development of creating the options, then there's developing the animations, differing positions and potentially appealing to differing fetishes
All of this combined would also have you having to work with a pretty small VR audience and if cub were included, would shrink the potential customer countries that legally allow it
Sex sims are great ideas on paper, but take a lot of work in practice
>>
>>342177869
It's just another gimmick. Anyone that says otherwise is just looking for justification for their purchase.
>>
>>342181918
I agree in part. The tech is nowhere near new, anyone who thinks so is moronic. The resurgence has come about through the mass production of various important components due to rise of Smart phones/tablets.

Anyone with any business sense will tell you, to look for new products/revenue streams using already established infrastructure, as it bypasses the exorbitant costs required to start up a new industry.

80's and 90s didn't have these components being mass produced, so the cost to make was high and on the consumer end it was unrealistically high.

These days, the cost to make these VR headsets are substantially lower, yet getting a mark up due to it being considered cutting edge tech.

That makes it seem more "official" then what I want. There's shit like yiffalicious (which is shit) and cathouse tale (scam) that are just jewtreon scams, but what if someone just puts together a small thing on their own? more of a demo on the side for giggles.

Idk what's better for making a VR game; unity/UE4 but I'd imagine however that works is just designing the game with the vive's controller in mind.

So instead of events being triggered on "press X" it happens when the vive sensors intersect with the character model so if you bob your mouth forward on Asriel's junk it would trigger an animation accordingly, etc. But now I'm thinking too hard. really hard.

>>
>>342177869
It's just a gimmick.
It's like all the 3D thing in Cinema. The problem with 3D is that it doesn't bring anything to Cinema (I mean, See the passage from B&W to color movie, or mute to sound, it actually bring a tons of new tools for the director, like being able to drastically change the perception of a scene just by using warm or cool color).
3D only emphasize something that's already there, it actually bring nothing, it makes it easier to immerse in an universe, but doesn't do the immersion itself.

VR is exactly the same, it emphasize on multiple aspect, but it actually doesn't bring anything new to the medium.

It will not die though, porn first will make it live, I can also totally see it being used for therapeutical aspect, or in museum for example, by recreating an historical scene and put you right in the middle of that.

>>342184080
Then again, there's a ton of different ways to track movement from the user, like controllers or even using a kinect, but that could potentially lower your audience size the more you stray away from devices they have for ones they don't

uh?
>>
>>342184591
I mean shit man, if the reason we aren't getting shit like that is because it's a niche within a niche, then we're literally never getting it. Furfags are poor as fuck and the ones that have money just blow it all on their herm taur demon vixen dickgir sparklefox comissions.

I just want some fucking furry trash in VR with nate
>>
>>342184709
I know you're just a poorfaggot justifying a TV purchase because you want/think VR is going to flop buddy, we get, no money, you lash out at things you can't have.

These things should have been a part of the VR (at least the vive) requirement, or bundled with it or fuck idk. Why did this shit not become a thing? this literally was the solution to the movement issue, but it didn't happen. What the fuck
>>
>>342177869
its a gimick for sure, but it will probably last a while, if not forever.
i think there is little chance of it ever taking over the market or anything like that, but it will probably have some sort of niche audience of consumers that will keep it afloat for a while, if not endlessly.
>>
>>342184836
>Furfags are poor as fuck
I don't know about that. From what I've heard those suits are stupidly expensive.
>>
>>342177869
It's a much better attempt than virtualboy but I don't think it'll work this time around either. Maybe when they try again 20 years later.
>>
The idea of VR creating worlds like in Second Life or being able to walk through Azeroth seems like any gamers dream. However I feel it is a gimmick and our technology isnt ready for it yet.

The games out for it looks on par with the OUYA. I hope we get over the VR meme, its worse than nintendo trying to pass off muh content when almost every game they have been releasing for last few years has been mediocre.

I would love to experience internet chatrooms in VR even 4chan would be quite interesting with ridiculous avatars. But I think more importantly the gaming industry needs to focus on being better not just copying what seems to be popular.

I think technology has shortened the attention spans of the general population today, they follow the money I just cant wait for the next gaming crash to get rid of the normies.
>>
>>342178616
If social justice agenda instead of porn will drive VR development and use, VR will stagnate and fade into obscurity within a few years.
>>
>>342185207
It depends on furry to furry, some people will take their money and blow it hard on commissions and fursuits to have everyone stroke their ego and dick if they get the chance while others just join in to make friends and maybe a fuckbuddy and just jerkoff to free art
>>
I'm thinking about buying it bros, I'm thinking about dropping 800+ on the Vive.
Well desu, it'll be 400+ because I'm sharing it.
>>
>>342186631
Try it first. Buy it if you had fun and want more of that.

I don't see the complication with VR honestly. Just fucking try it at gameshit for yourself. If you didn't have fun with it then it's not for you

>>342184959
>why didn't this already expensive product come bundled with a (360 degree) treadmill, something which is also an expensive product
>>
VR is trash. The graphics are always ugly and off. And think of the headaches itll bring

The eye damage over time will cause huge problems. Looking at computer and phone screens has been proven to cause eye problems over time

>But let's strap a huge machine on your head and force harmful lights and motions on your eyes.

Its the one fact about it. Bright screens, fake motion and so on do cause eye problems. And VR is just going to quicken and worsen the problem....and add a headache
>>
>>342186763
I saw the GTAV video, only thing that bugs me is that you have to "Teleport" to get around instead of just using the controllers to move forward.
>>
>>342177869

I have absolutely no interest in VR and I honestly think people who are buying into VR are fools with their money and just want some gimmicky garbage that isn't for video games.
>>
I think it will work for porn and waifushit which is my primary concern
>>
>>342178047
This. Although the entire use of it right now is nothing but gimmicks. VR won't ever catch on until it is relatively inexpensive and also easy to put on.
>>
>>342180675
This is hololens right? Now that does look cool, this "VR" thing is shit.
>>
>>342177869
It's a gimmick but only in regards to gaming. They really need to start branching out.
>>
>>342177869
The later. What we have now isn't practical enough to replace a controller and a screen and it's too expensive to be anything beyond a toy for people with too much free time and disposable income.

Why does it have to replace conventional methods?
Why can't it just be a subset of shit for enthusiasts?
If that's the case than PC gaming is dead because the majority flock to consoles.

How can you not? In fact, the more advanced it gets, the more retarded someone would look playing it. Once entire body suit's/gloves/etc. start coming out you're going to look a lot more dumb then someone looking confused in a chair with just a brick on their face.

You might as well be complaining about how game motion capture isn't worth it because they have to wear weird black suits with glowing bulbs all over.

For the longest time I thought VR was going to be something big but I can't believe that anymore.

Maybe it will have other applications, but VR headsets being as commonplace as PCs and video game consoles, is something I just can't see happening.

>VR headsets being as commonplace as PCs and video game consoles
Consoles are not as commonplace as PCs even, that's a false equivalence.

I do agree VR will be a rich-man's hobby for a year or so.
After that, I expect enough people to have tried it to want their own for immersing themselves in porn, horror, action, and fantasies.
