for decades i've had to heard "muh SS2" when playing bioshock 1
so i finally get SS2 and it blows
every enviroment is a grey hallway, save for the final area that takes place in a butthole
the interface is just terrible and you'll spend more time trying to figure out what to click to do what you want than figuring out how to advance through the game

It's been only 1,7 decades.
There really ain't too many different buttons to press nor do they differ from most more recent games if you spend 30 seconds rebinding actions.
You might even want to cut off certain actions completely like camera center, rotation and leaning to save those keys to more useful things.
Bioshock wan't exactly colorful either, at least in a pleasant way.

I assumed EMP grenades were the best ammo for fighting robots and turrets

and my standard weapons skill was only a notch or two higher than my heavy weapons, and the grenades still did fuck-all compared to the pistol with AP bullets

Heavy weapons aren't that bad. The grenade launcher's upgrades are bugged so it does insane damage, and the fusion cannon is a decent all purpose weapon since it's super ammo efficient and pretty killy. They're not as good as standard weapons but they're okay.
It's energy and exotic weapons that are the worst, since they're only good against one type of enemy, and aren't even much better than standard weapons are. There's no point to them when standard weapons work fine against every enemy type, and are available earlier, and don't have the million drawbacks exotic weapons do. Laser rapier/crystal shard are nice, but they're not that nice.

I made the mistake of spending all my cyber modules on exotic weapons before the final level, because I assumed there would be nothing but worms for ammunition in there

but then I find out that they do literally zero damage against The Many

I spent most of that level freezing shit with the freeze ray (or whatever it's called) and then whacking them to death with the crystal
