Gluttonous hog of a game, promised everything to everyone. Will probably under deliver on a majority of its claims.

Old game creator. Made shitty space games since the 90s. Famous for getting into unending flame wars and threatening everyone with lawsuits whenever someone said anything bad about his games. He also showed up whenever someone mentioned his game anywhere in the Internet.

Curious, what do the backers get for that kind of investment? Do you know? Look if they are gonna get that money back at some point, great, but I do not think that is the case.

Here is how backing should work. I backed Pcars when WMD was dev it. I backed them with $25 and got early access..cool and expected. Then they actually finished it, and put it on Steam. Since then, I have had 3 deposits from WMD into my paypal account. They have given me back more money than I gave them at this point and with more to come. They actually are profit sharing with their backers. That is the way it is done. Anything else is not backing or investing, it is charity and just giving your money away. That is what Star Citizen is doing, just taking money, giving you a digital ship(you do not own it, they do) and that's it. I don't think you will see a dime returned to the people that backed it. Star Citizen might as well be a starving child in Africa you send money too every month, but that kid will never even say thanks for the help let alone pay you back once he is able to succeed..
>>
Probably due to the devs selling ships for hundreds of dollars, which is really shitty. But I don't want it to fail, but it will eventually.
>>
>>342176894
>>342178674

As long as you admit you're petty people then you can enjoy yourselves.
>>
>>342180016
Its a donation not an investment. You give money and get digital ships, you're not going to get $15,000 back when the game launches.

Backers =/= investors.
>>
>>342171662
It does look pretty good.

The whole "it's a scam" thing was caused by a nutty ex employee who is known for doing that shit to get people to pay attention to him. Chris Roberts wrote a pretty specific letter addressing each point that guy made (forget his name) I haven't bought the game yet, but I've been doing some research on it and the videos they post every week are pretty damn transparent, the staff usually seems excited and there are a lot of talented people working there.

I wouldn't just buy into the scam memes because you saw a shitposter talk about it.

For that kind of cash they should be sending those folks physical models of their ships so they can display them at home at least. I mean fuck 15k and they just let those folks use some code in a game that others cannot use. I mean I assume none of those ships could be attained in game by a non donator. Pretty amazing to believe they have gotten 110mil as of Mar out of people. With little show for it apparently. It boggles the mind really.

Austin isn't still open. They're rolling it up into LA. They're not doing any new hires for their Austin studio. >>
>>342170610

I don't personally want it to fail but I do find this to be an amazing demonstration of exactly why we have the usual model for how goods and services are produced.

The usual formula is
>Good or service is provided
>Hand money

Star citizen has used the method of
>hand money
>wait for good or service to be provided

When you hand millions of dollars to someone, regardless of whether they have the best intentions or not they are not going to be as efficient with it as if it was there own money. The motivation to do a good job and make people happy pales in comparison to the motivation of profit and wealth. I'm sorry kids, but in the end game devs and publishers, with their deadlines and their market research are absolutely critical to producing real games.

If Star Citizen was ever going to be a real thing, why did the guy go to kick starter to beg for donations vs. get a real investment by eager millionaires looking to produce the most sought after space game to ever exist and make shittons of money?

Because he wanted to make the space game he could never make. If there was a publisher they would be poking around changing everything to CoD/whatever sells.

On the flip side without a publisher breathing down their neck the development process is a patched together mess which might not produce anything.
>>
Something about it has always felt clunky. Is it a problem inherit to Cryengine? I felt the same way about the Crysis games.

More importantly, I have a strong feeling that aspiring captains are grossly overestimating how many other players want to crew their ships as opposed to flying their own.

Also, CIG has basically answered so many questions thinly veiled feature requests to the tune of "can we do ___" with "yes" that they are spreading themselves way too thin. See: When's the last time they spoke or did anything about racing? That's supposed to be another huge feature in the game.

It's great that they are being ambitious, and I genuinely want the game to succeed, but I think they are trying to do too much too quickly. I sure hope they surprise me.
>>
>>342189817
They talked about racing recently in the Dragonfly advert.
>>
>>342189817
The clunkyness of movement right now is part Cryengine and partially because they don't have proper quick animations for anything, leading to 30 second seating times.

Also the netcode is dogshit so everything feels horribly sludgy in Universe mode.

i bring it up because it is a straight-faced attempt by, i suppose now, activision to budge cowadootie in that direction and benefit at least partially from the interest in spacecraft simulation titles beginning to manifest, for lack of a better word.

if you look at their latest gameplay trailer from e3 you'll see that the piloted fighter craft may as well be the fucking baby of a Sabre and Avenger. it's so blatant i couldn't help but giggle.

this isn't to say that cod is itself a space sim now, i'm absolutely convinced that the sections featuring such things are going to be more or less rail sequences. that's not a real flight model, or anything else constituting the genre.

I don't want it to fail. But when you see so much hype coming from people putting their faith in a guy who always wanted to make movies, and used video games as a stepping stone to get there(and failed, coming back to games as a fallback), you just get to wanting to snipe back a bit.

Hence why the ToS was changed so that no one can get their money back. It was so that Chris can complete this game without everyone panicking and pulling out their funds from underneath the game.

If I were in Chris' shoes, and I wanted full control over funding (with the utmost intention to actually deliver the game at some point), I wouldve done the same thing.

It depends on the package. If you purchase the frigate you could use it as a symbol of power to gain favors from other alliances. The $15k package gives you a huge library to choose from, but it's not worthwhile unless you have a LOT of friends to help pilot them.
