I played and enjoyed a lot of dungeoncrawlers, but I always drop out of Etrian Odyssey 1.
I think it's the slow levelling and too few upgrades at each level. I also don't really enjoy manual mapping.

It's disappointing that even as far into the series as they are and with the ability to recolor all the sprites, that there's so little variety. There were a lot of EO3 portraits that let you choose between a younger or older looking man or woman. Unfortunately 5 is just more of 4 where the only difference between any of them is the hairstyle.

If you can bring an archer to bind his arms the fight becomes super easy. Usually you'll know you can handle a boss if you're able to defeat the FOE without too much trouble.

They all have really slow leveling/progression unless you're playing with an optimal party and know exactly how to build your characters. And most of the dungeons are super simple so you don't need to map yourself. I think 4 gives you rewards for mapping the whole floor but otherwise you can easily get away with just markers for 1-way walls and setting up the auto-walking to reach different floors more quickly.

I think manual mapping is the highlight of Etrian. It's really calming for me to just walk around and check stuff out. Not many other games have integrated player mapping.
The power curve is really slow, but you can lean on one or two skills until they kick in. New weapons are usually a huge upgrade compared to everything else.

Any tips for EO2U, Classic Expert?
Somehow I'm finding this way harder than I should and I'm only on the second floor. Enemies basically one-shot my guys unless I have Front Guard active, and it takes enough TP to win each fight that I'm barely breaking even with Ariadne Threads/inn stays each run.
Also, do people tend to take the time to level up all classes equally, or do you stick with a main team?

Better and more difficulty options. Story mode is a complete joke, they should just scrap the gameplay at that point since it's "mash A" padding. Perhaps add more separated options like customizable healing costs, craftable material costs, permadeath, TP regeneration formulas, etc.
Some floors are way, way too padded with absolutely nothing interesting going on. I think the games would benefit from some more condensed gameplay even if the playtime total would be lower. Especially in the middle of the game it can often feel like a drag.

They're still difficult and you can easily just play Classic mode and get the same experience as previous games, they even added harder modes.

While it's easy to cast away EO1U as one of the worsts for how poorly it handeled and how weak everything felt, I can very easily say that I greatly enjoyed EO2U, it felt like a massive improvement from the former, even if most of the bosses have hp bloat, it felt good to be able to do some bigger numbers, not only that but revamping War Magus and Beast from being beyond mediocre gimmicks into competent and amazing classes was a very good move

I actually agree with that. U2 fixed a lot of issues I had by making grimoires less annoying, not locking most things behind the story and making the classes feel really good to play. They even gave attacks that hit multiple enemies more of a purpose in boss fights. It actually does feel like a vastly improved version of 2.
