I genuinely enjoyed FEAR 2 just as much as 1 and thought it had decent progression, if less detailed effects. How casual am I?

>those webms

I'd be hyped for FEAR 1 if it was shown at E3. It's literally better than everything they showed.
>>
>>342159043
It must be truly horrifying to be a cloned soldier created only for the purpose of combat in the most hazardous of scenarios to be taken down by some abomination who can react and move faster than you can pull your gun's trigger. I suppose that's why the game is called FEAR.
>>
>>342161551

>people give FEAR 3 so much shit and yet FEAR 2 gets a pass
Neither game was good. But FEAR 3 didn't have that fucking awful HUD or guns that had the power of a paper ball.

FEAR 3 also had the sort of excuse of being made by a different team. IIRC most of the original FEAR team left at some point between 1 and 2 but still.

>>342161952
Huh. I played both 1 and 2 on PC, so I'd have thought otherwise. You don't hear much about 2, far less than even the first.

I think the only games that come close in terms of having such refined shooting mechanics as Fear 2 are Metro: Last Light and MGS:V. The muzzle climb for FEAR 1 bugged the shit out of me.

>Power of a paper ball
Maybe if you were using the same guns by the end of the game, but that's the progression, where everything is armored to shit. Eh. It's not the BEST progression but it's something, even if it's sort of just health padding. Headshots, though.
>>
>>342161551

only good part of 2 was the mech boss suprise

FEAR is a fucking awful horror game.

Fantastic FPS though.
>>

great shooter
garbage edgy storyline
>>
>>342162048
I liked FEAR3 much better than FEAR2. It had better environments, more varied level design and carried on the story of the first game. it did chuck the spooky elements of the game out almost completely but FEAR2 wasn't spooky either.

only Extraction point and Perseus Mandate managed that.

I could never get these properly working.

i actually read it pretty neat stuff. i wonder if it will be possible in future to make neural networks be AI in games. so that with each playthrough it only gets better and better within some rules via online learning. Hell it would be so much better if it was also able to gather user data from every gamer playing that game on earth and the neural net slowly learns the average human behaviour and tunes its AI accordingly.

As an avid fan of STALKER with;
500+ hours in CoP,
234 hours in Clear Sky
300 hours in SoC

No, the AI are generally retarded with brief sparks of not simply strafing back and forth
>>
>>342163280
Just play it anon, it's not even scary in the least
>>
>>342163749

>>
>>342164390
not same Anon you replied to, and I have easily 1000s of hours put to all 3 games, but the A-Life system in the games is simply amazing, down to the behavioral elements of individual NPCs.

FEAR and many other games still utilize heavy scripting and "bread crumbs" systems to make the AI work, but STALKER's is very dynamic and "realtime" in comparison.
>>
>>342163280
fear 1 isnt really spooky, well atleast once you have figured out that during the spooky parts nothing can happen to you that can hurt you
there is only one effective jump scare in the whole game, you climb up some ladder and suddenly some shit stands infront of you when you turn around
>>
>>342159276
I wish the bodies stayed. All the gore and decals disappear after like 30 seconds and its hard coded into the game
>>
>>342164986
I'm pretty sure the scripts and coding for A-Life don't directly follow over to combat scripts, because the most I've ever seen is strafing and creeping around corners. That's it.
>>
>>342164806
>>342165123
i actually tried playing it couple of times but i get so spooked at the ladder segment i instantly alt + f4 fuck me.

i really hate fps horror games. i can play tps all day but fps just makes me nervous so hard. wth is wrong with me.
>>

>>
>>342165462
its all because when i was a 5 year old kid my mother thought it would be funny to scare me in the middle of the night and while all the lights were of jumping from fucking shadows. i slept with lights on for years because of it.
>>
>>342160302
the thing is, FEAR's AI isn't even that impressive, it's just that every other AI is shit.

>>342164390
>>342164986
the combat AI can be quite neat at times, crouching down, slowly going around corners, rudimentarily trying to flank you.
It's not amazing, but it's a step above countless other games

>>342165393
the spookiest thing in the game are the invisible enemies, otherwise the jump scares aren't even scary.
You can also very easily tell when the game goes from a shooter to a spooky section, so it's very easy to brace yourself for incoming spooks
>>
>>342165909
i know it gets all static and shit but old habits die hard unfortunately.
>>
>>342166154
Only thing to do is go through with it, you won't get any better by not experiencing it.

these: >>342164872

Best AI I've seen in a recent shooter was in Uncharted 4. They do a lot of the same suppression fire / flanking / encircling kind of behaviors as seen in FEAR's AI, only it's usually outdoors

thats really shitty you know a real bad parenting example. you dont scare your little kid like that because it creates very stupid traumas. my mother apologized i forgot how many times because of her scaring me like that but i still bear the mark i guess.
>>
>>342164872
what's so good about the AI in condemned? I mostly just remember walking around and brutally fighting crazed hobos with a plank

Never got to play Condemned 2 because it was a console exclusive. Was the AI good in that?

mah nigga

I always stop playing after an hour or two in the campaign because it's too spooky.
These people saying the game isn't scary are retarded, they think that just because they aren't scared by it, no one should and therefore the game isn't spooky.
I mean the fucking title is F.E.A.R, and it's clearly designed to be scary.

I played the shit out of the multiplayer tho, aerial kicks were fun.

>Oh no, some kids got scared because of some stupid snapchat filter!
Their parents will show their kids those videos when they're older, and they'll all laugh at it. It's not bad parenting or child abuse.

>>
>>342169230
human psychology is pretty interesting anon, i recommned you to read some books about it.
>>
>>342168856
Jump scares will never not be genuinely scary unless you've experienced each one and know exactly when and where it will happen, effectively reducing effectiveness. Just play the fucking game.

>>342169230
It's still not something I'd show a five-seven year old, whose brains are incredibly and easily imprinted on, you mongoloid. Sure, they'll laugh about it in 12 or so years, but for real? They don't need that shit for a parent to get a laugh.
>>
>>342169421
There's a reason why psychology isn't considered a science, anon.
>>342169529
My grandfather made me play Silent Hill when I was six. Sure, it scared the shit out of me, but it made no psychological damage whatsoever. In fact, it's one of my favorite games now.
>>
>>342163909
I didn't care for the writing too much, and the nightcrawler assault rifle outclassed pretty much every other weapon while having incredibly common ammo and a piss-ugly scope.
>>
>>342159382
That guy barging out at the end of the demo was great. Didn't end up playing all of FEAR until 5 and a half years ago.

>>342162054
Is 15 minutes in FEAR 3 a good enough amount of time to say "This game sucks"? That's all I gave it.
>>
>>342165393
play the scariest game you can come up with during the day when the sun's out. then ease into paying it at night, maybe for just an hour at a time until you beat it.

I did this and now no games spook me anymore.
>>
>>342169862
And it's obvious why not because you seem to not recognize that everybody is not like you

>>342163909
Seriously, how does one change the fucking resolution in these games?
>>
>>342165909
the ninjas suck but they make a slight but distinct electric/static noise, so you can tell when they're around and when they're getting close.
>>
>>342170452
the pc gaming wiki has instructions on changing the resolution manually
>>
>>342170452
Your screen resolution should be selectable in FEAR with the last patch, 1.08

As for the expansions, open up the game's settings.cfg in a text editor and change "ScreenWidth" "xxxx" and "ScreenHeight" "xxxx" to your resolution.
>>
>>342170993
>>342171060
Thank you, this is pretty much what I needed. No idea why it wasn't included.
>>
>>342171060
You need to set the file to read only steer this to iirc. so make sure you've made all the other graphics changes before editing.
>>
>>342170521
It's worth noting landmines fuck them up hard. Remote bombs can work in a pinch too.
They're also vulnerable to getting bicycle kicked, like almost every other enemy that isn't a mech.
