Played through twice, alchemy/swords and signs/alchemy.
Alchemy is disgustingly good. Shitton of buffs, huge toxicity and a 25% instaheal on any potion. If only the mutagen wasn't so useless.
Signs are horribly balanced since they either trivialize things completely or makes them a pain in the ass. Enough intensity means you can just Aard or Igni everytime it comes off cooldown and the enemies will stay stunlocked. But then the game throws you into a "no signs allowed" scenario and you're stuck tickling enemies with a toothpick.
They're still useful though even if you ignore intensity completely. Aard is a great way to extend combos on those axe and shield enemies, Quen means ignoring one hit entirely and Yrden can be worthwhile if you have shit tier reflexes.

Get the walking speed mod for Witcher 1, keep in mind that playing fullscreen and alt-tabbing might make the game freak out. Also the game's difficulty curve is a bit wack, you might get your shit wrecked during the first boss fight and then later on by a single enemy that thankfully you can run away from.
Witcher 2 doesn't have any "essential" mods but the mutagen system sucks dick so you might want to mod that. Mods that give you more talents per level would also be fun, auto loot if you want to make your life easier.
I hope you like reading because the first game is bursting at the seams with lore and sets up the setting. Lots of people complain about combat or drowners but they are retarded, just run away. If you want a perfect playthough I recommend you look at a guide when it's time to perform a certain procedure with a medic friend halfway through the game because the choices the game gives you can be awfully vague and deceiving.
Witcher 2 is kind of the awkward middle step between rpg combat and action combat. I hated the upgrade systems and how it lacked enemy targeting but you might fare better. I recommend you ignore parrying completely to upgrade your dodge moves instead. The plot is solid though, mid game is pretty great.

Am I the only one who uses rend spam for combat? So much fun. Just hold click for a fraction of a second to release a rapid rend that nearly always crits and ignores enemy armor, defence, blocking while often permastaggering them. Couple it with severance enchantment to increase its range and you have an attack that cuts enemies in a line 2.5 yards long in front of you. Repeat ad infinitum and cut every enemy in half.

Yes that's dumb but rare too. Biggest problem for me with signs has been random enemy resistances, some enemies get raped by igni, some are almost immune to all signs. The new freezing aard does solid damage to almost anything though so that helps. I still like signs build with insane stamina regen most.

Only true way to play is strictly using signs as specific counters ( aard on harpies, axii on alghouls, etc.) and general combat being full on swordplay complemented with Alchemyshame alchemy is almost as overpowered as the signs with that massive toxicity limit

Whirl is practically only good for 2 hits at most 99% of the time since everything will recover and then stagger, swarm, or do some other shit to kill you. The only time whril shines is if something gets stunned for a while then you can bust out a lot of dps but even then strong attacks are usually more effective.
