I think borderlands 1 and 2 are a lot of fun, more so with friends, but the writing in the second one almost kills the game.
1 - pretty good all around.
2 - horrible writing. gameplay can be more interesting than 1, but horrible balance is a problem.
presequel - horrible writing. good gameplay. much shorter than 2; you don't get much bang for your buck.
Ultimate guilty pleasure.
The dialogue is offensively bad but I love everything else about it.
If you play it with voices muted and play your own music it becomes 100x better.
With Burch gone hopefully BL3 will have good dialogue that doesn't make me want to rip my teeth out to take my mind off of what I'm hearing.The Tiny Tina D&D dlc is legitimately amazing

TPS probably has the best gameplay but also the worst writing and is incredibly short.

I have no problem with the gameplay itself, I find its fun playing with almost any character
First one was alright but the environments are rather lacking. Second one has a shit ton of content but you'll probably get bored long before you see all of it. It has more variety in environments though for what it's worth. Loot system in 2 is garbage though and higher difficulties showcase this to the extreme. I haven't played the presequel but it sounds like more of an expansion than a full game. Skill trees in all the games are underwhelming as fuck with too many passives.
I liked all three. The first one is a bit repetitive but the DLC is great. General Knoxx is better than the main game in some ways.
The second has more variety but the level scaling is fucked. Only two of the DLCs are good and there is a shitload of grinding for tokens.
The pre-sequel has a lot of neat ideas but too much backtracking across the same few maps for 90% of the game. The player characters have been given some personality but they are still the worst out of any of the games. I didn't bother with extra playthroughs but apparently the level scaling was fixed.
Tales from the Borderlands is great too. By far the best Tales game.

Borderlands 1 was really boring to me for some reason. PC port was really terrible too with an awful FOV. There's a "fix" for it, but every time you sprint it resets the FOV so it's a real chore. Also the areas you ran through all sort of looked the same. The DLC was pretty good though.
Borderlands 2 has a great PC port, has many more varied environments, and barring a few strange omissions from BL1 (revolvers, I think a type of ammo), it's overall the better game. The writing is 80 percent hot garbage and 20 percent decent jokes, but I'm not super offended by memes and whatnot. Sir Hammerlock is the most annoying cunt in the universe but Tiny Tina isn't nearly as bad as some people think. DLCs were also really good here besides Hammerlock's Big Game Hunt, which was full of bullet sponge enemies.
Also you may want to limit the number of runs you do for BL2 to around 2, because Legendary Vault Hunter's just a total slog unless you get one of the ultimate weapons.

BL2 its also fun, horrible level scalling tho, weapons became a mess once you are high lvl, there are only a few of good builds on lvl 50+ so it kinda kills the fun for me, its not the memefest people like to say but beware
The Pre-sequel seems a like a big DLC that never happened for BL2, the level scaling fix'd to some degree, loot is awful, can't say about builds and progression, only lvl 16 atm, level desings are horrible, the dialogue is a fucking tumblr-fest, in the first few minutes you will hear "homophobic" "friendzone" and "misogynistic", no kidding, almost all the characters seem forzed.
