The godawful story necessitated it, but the execution just felt onanistic. It's far from the worst of MGS4, but I don't think it's anything special. It's an improvement over Gray Fox running into your fist in MG2, but I wouldn't consider it a series highlight.

It also had some nicely refined mechanics, it's just that you couldn't use them as much as you'd like to.

As for BB being venom; it isn't incoherent considering the amount of lies being fed to you in addition to the PTSD and hallucinations. On top of that, "big boss" does survive at the end of MG1.
With that said, it's perfectly fine that your head canon is the avatar. It's one of 3 ultimate options the person has at the end of their day

What a bunch of convenient hallucinations. What about the timeline? Is that, despite its more objective presentation as it's detached from the narrative, also some kind of hallucination? The tapes that discuss the plan? Big Boss and Ocelot's conversation before Big Boss runs off to America? Wow, what oddly specific hallucinations!
It renders what you decide is and isn't a hallucination utterly arbitrary and undermines nearly everything into being pointless.
