You are trapped in an underwater facility the goal is to escape.

The only enemy is the slowly but steadily rising water level which as it gets higher and higher affects your movement.

I'm more of a psychological horror kind of guy, like Silent Hill

>first or third person
>the most unbearably tense atmosphere
>maybe some monsters
>combat is slow and sluggish, your character fearfully hits monsters with either bare hands or pipes etc.
>every kill lowers your sanity, and makes you reckless in the story
>every kill gets more and more brutal
>choose between killing monsters or escaping/stealth
>no good ending because fuck you

It's a criticism of Japanese society. This along with The Enigma of Amigara Fault were both stories criticizing Japanese society that were published at the end of Gyo.
Basically the post is about how Japanese men work themselves to death to support a household.
The Enigma of Amigara Fault is about how Japanese people feel compelled to go into a life that someone else determined for them and how it twists them and tortures them into something that they can't even recognize as themselves anymore.
The holes in the cliff face terrify the people, yet they can't avoid the compulsion of climbing into them.

>>
A game in which you are a grave digger who has to dig graves at night In preperation for the next days funeral services. You would need a variety of diffrent tools to do your job when it came to preping the graves such as shears to clip tree roots, pickaxe to split and clear rocks, a wheel barrow to haul away loose dirt, flood light to illuminate you work area, a generator and fuel needed to power the lights, a head lamp that needs it's batteries changed from time to time.

You have a quota each night of how many graves you have to dig and in what areas of the cemetary. For the first few night of work everything would be more or less an intro to how things are done and the grading system based on the quality of grave dug and how well cleared the sight was of debris. All of this is loosely timed as you need to meet your quota before sunrise.

Eventual you start to hallucinate. You go to clip a thick cluster of roots and when you do they turn into limbs that cut with a sickening crunch and splatter of blood but not even a second later they're back to being roots.

You generator for your flood lights is running out of gas so you go to refill it and instead of pouring gas it's thick blood but it quickly changes back.

You go to break a rock and it turns into a human face in which your pick axe can dynamic enter the skull depend on how you had swug at it sending gore every which way. But then it's just a split rock.

As your digging you uncover what appears to be a skeleton but it's really just roots.

Etc

Cont.
>>
Later on the quota grows and you come to realize that you can no longer use the flood light and generator as their setup and maitinence cuts into your time too much. So you are left to to using the dinky head lamp. Which before it goes out dims and then starts flickering. You only have a limited number of replacement batteries and unless you wanna work in the dark (nearly impossible and when the really freaky shit starts)
You can't spam battery replacment.

When this starts as your light dims you will ocassionaly here whimpering and frantic whispering but not always. (the game will be silent in regards to any music, with only ambient noise of the area around you, your actions, the wind, etc. The use of silence as a true horror enuducer will be key. You will stop hearing wind rustling in the trees or cars on a near by road while digging out a grave but other sounds will still remain. This will be dynamic in the spirit of replay ability.

As your light dims you might be shoveling dirt out of the hole, look up to toss it out and see an outline of a person hanging from a noose in a tree (your light will flicker and when it comes back the silhouette will be gone)

Towards the end of your sanity you will be digging and clods of dirt will be pushed back into the hole and you will go to toss them out only to realize nothing is on your shovel.

You will hear things moving outside your hole some moving quickly others very slowly, if you look nothing will be there.

As time goes on the previous illusion you first saw (the limb you cut, the skull you pickaxed) will persist longer. The head might come of and stick onto the pickaxe after you hit it. The limbs might twitch when cut.

>GRAVE DIGGER
>>
On the final night there will be a storm and the rain will come down hard covering up to your knees as you dig the illusions will permeate as you look away. You might find one arm look away and there will be another at a diffrent angel jutting into your hole. Thunder storm raging about in what was once a very quite game. As you try to cut away and throw limbs out of the hole more will just appear floating in the water at your feet mixed in with body chunks. When finally you go to get out of the hole you will not be able to move your feet. The water will have risen another few inches and you will be able to splash it about with your tools (doing so at the right angle around your feet will reveal a multitude of hand below the water line holding your legs in place)

The storm get insane loud and the water will be comming down really hard and filling the hole. When you inevitably start hack at the hands holding you dirt from the walls of your hole will start to cave in around you water rising all the while. Enough dirt caves in hands and faces protrude from the dirt walls all in various states of decomposition. If you swing at them you will be able to beat them away and hack them apart before finally they will grab your tool and you pulling you close to them. If in these last moment you turn about you will see cascades of dirt and body parts and heaps of flesh filling your hole in a gore mud slide.

You will die in this hole.

It will cut to a news report on TV about the death of a grave digger (you) who had dug himself into a mass grave. Only to die when run off water pushed his dirt pile in on him smothering him. No info will be given as to why a mass grave was there.

It's a cool concept but I'm not seeing much of actual gameplay. The idea of you being a grave digger, slowly losing his mind could work though, even if you went with a Visceral Detail Cleanup sort of game. Doing the same task over and over again as things slowly change.

This is actually an incredible idea. A good way to add meaningful gameplay instead of it just being a walking simulator would be having a "stress" meter that makes it harder and harder to complete your everyday tasks (naturally causing more "horrifying" jump scare events) like >>342144163

I would really fucking play that.
>>
>>342151082
Very much visceral cleanup duty style work the gameplay comes from more of a race against the clock in the later days combo'd with the amount of freaky shit you come across. But unlike VCD this would have to be very high fidelity In teem of the dirt digging aspect and over all texture quality

Free-roam Five Nights at Freddy's-esque defense game. You're in a house at night, can peek out windows, turn on generator lights to shine on the driveway / front yard / front door

As the night goes on, the things will start to get into your house and you'll be forced to use less of the house and lock yourself deeper inside.

Don't peek out the curtain if you know something is right behind it.

>>342152906
If you managed to rally a few developers, even small-time ones, to help, you could make it work. If you had a specific art style and not just realism you could achieve a good level of dirt detail and not look out of place.

>>
>>342149875
I hate to be that guy, but as someone who spent time as a grave digger this shit is redundant. Dig that shit during the daytime, not like anyone who comes to the cemetery isn't going to be like "yeah that's his job let him do it."

Also, not having a backhoe indicates that you're in a shitty rural cemetery with low funding so your quota would probably be like one grave a month.

I guess if you don't care about immersion then you're fine as I'd, but right now that shit isn't fooling anyone. Good try though.

Idea2: VR GAME

You are a world war 3 medic. The game consists of a far more realistic surgeon simulator but with more inutive controls and physics using the touch controls and devices most VR gear setups are showing off these days. You work with fellow medics assisting you at times but for the most part solo. The story is rich and you come to meet and know all of the people in your squad well before any real shit goes down.

Mechanics involved, such as cutting or tearing away gear of wounded to better get at the wound. Subduing the wounded so you can work on the whether by administering drugs or holding them down / getting squad mates to help hold them still too even yelling at them to stop moving via your mic. You may have to preform minor field surgeries to remove bullets, pinch arteies, extract shrapnel, amputate appendages and limbs etc, apply simple bandages treat burns, transport wounded, insert IV's, preform compressions, apply splints and neckbraces whipping away blood with guas to see what you are working on and so on.

First patients will be wounded from another squad you meet up with. So it doesn't feel too personal when you inevitably loose them as its your first time. It will be made personal when one of the medics assisting you turns on you shoving you and throwing his helmet at you sobbing about how he saw what you were doing and you could have done more, before his squad mates pull him off you. You quickly the man you failed to save in the tutorial was that guys brother.

You will treat a lot of people some if your own squad. Some wounds will be simple others will be very complex you Wil largely be guided by a junior medic who constantly is remarking about "how the fuck did you pass medic training" and similar banter.

Eventually you will be treating your squad mate more and more, how well you do and whether or not you save them affects the outcome of the story.

You wake up in a house unfamiliar to you. You find a VHS tape that shows a Filmteam visit the house and one of the guys, lets call him Andre disappears and you cant follow him because of hillybilly magic. So you wander around the house endlessly, trying to get out of it alive, but a hillybilly zombie father always welcomes you to the family, because you are his wife's son.
>>
Field medic cont.

Some wounds will not be treatable (direct head wounds, legs blown off at the belly button, arm up to and including shoulder blown off) but you will just have to do the best you can. Each wound can be treated diffrently while others have false options that only lead to the death of the patient. As more people die under your care your squads dialogue and tone will change when talking to you, you once almost enthusiastic junior medic will feed you instructions bitterly and with a tone of frustration.

The only fighting you do will result in the wounding of civilians and or your squadmates depending upon how you dealt with previous situations. Depending upon how you shot them you will have to patch them up, put two to thier head? Guess what they died.

What's so scary about it? The horrors of war. The intesity of the atmosphere the high stakes pressure. The gutteral screams for mothers as blood fills air ways with arms out stretched; one arm with a compound fracture missing fingers the other torn off but hanging by a thread of flesh bone protruding from the stump blood gushing.

End?

I feel like the best horror is voyeur horror. Like you're looking in at something awful but it's every day for people. Like the game opens up and it's a phone screen. Get an email, or text from a friend saying do this shit, come on. You download the app. You get on see a black login screen and use his login.

I guess webcams of serial murders and stuff but you get to choose how they hunt and kill other people. Give the victims a chance to get away without drawing attention to yourself. Draw too much attention and the next time you log in the webcam shows your front step. What you select to get away, he does the opposite and kills you dead.

The real back story would be quasi world war three but it's over and done before much happens but the loosing country to start the war used bio weapons over pretty much the entire planet. The limbs and what not would all have sores on them and the TV reporter would have very faint scars hidden mostly by makeup in the same fashion as those on the bodies this is more or less for the fan base to connect the dots on.

Also most grave digging is done in atleast small groups no? Another audity is this guy is solo digging. Not to mention the lack of any interaction with any sort of managment. Just a pocket book with a list. He is crazy. Each graves assignment log will list waaay too munch info about the person and what area they might to have wanted to be buried in.

This because he's digging graves for people he knew and is digging them more or less illegally on the cemetary property.

Slenderman warnings are always so helpful.
>>
The protagonist has a shitload of mental issues and needs his meds regularly to keep their shit together. Obviously, meds aren't available so you end up with severe symptoms which turn your life into a living hell. Add in some paranormal mindfuck and player has good time deciding whether the bogeymen are real or "real". Additionally, player's inner voices could randomly give them instructions and advices, half of which help them while rest lead them straight towards their doom.

the concept is very nice, (especially the muting outside noises when digging the graves, that's downright brilliant)
However, I don't think besides the atmosphere itself that it's very scary, blood, gore and dead bodies aren't really scary. What's scary is something alive that could very well hurt you.
If you had to dig graves while you had the sense that something was off in the distance constantly watching you and on occasion showing itself more, it'd be fucking scary

>digging a grave
>it's really deep, so your head is below ground level
>hear a strange noise
>look up
>monstrous entity leaning over into grave
>disappears after like 2-3 seconds with a flash of lighting, just long enough for the player to get a good look and to absolute shit their pants

visuals only matter for monster design, something most games severely lack.

Sound is a very important aspect overlooked in most games and is hands down the most important aspect of design in a horror game.
Sound itself is excellent at setting a mood, with certain musics and sounds being able to draw out certain emotions alone.
With the right choice of sound you can turn a comfy, cute little area into something that just feels off in the worst way and keeps you tense.
It can turn a decrepit sewer into a rather happy place.

I was thinking about something but over all.i was looking to break the stereotypical monster kill person jump scare stuff and for a more psychological thriller type vibe. The steady decent into insanity vs the waking nightmare.

It's just disgusting
The girl scratches her leg and pimples start growing and oozing all over her leg and ass and they open up into gaping holes

Or something like that

The entity doesn't necessarily have to kill you, it just has to be present for it's affect to freak the fuck out of people and to really put them on edge so that as they dig the graves their constantly checking their surroundings, tense that the entity will reappear

Descents into madness are great, but the way you would intend to go down it just isn't scary and honestly playing through your game would leave you with a serious case of blue balls to be immersed in such a spooky atmosphere the entire time for it to only pay off with some moving limbs. You'd really just end up with that "That's it?" feeling

glad to help anon.

Keep in mind for the monster though, that the best way to get people spooked and and keep them spooked is for the creature to be so intensely scary that they dread just seeing it again. Something like this >>342152105 is a perfect example.
I clicked on that once and saw it for a split second and I know for sure that I would live better never having to see it again.
Lots of games that go for the straight up scare factor just tend to completely lack in the enemy's design, and in the end the only horror it has is out of pure shock value.

>>342164546
also, another thing I always think of as a perfect example of sound design being an absolute necessity for horror games it that Slenderman game that was popular a couple years ago.
Slenderman himself isn't scary, he's just a tall guy with a blank white face. There's nothing inherently frightening about him, however the entire horror of the game comes from the sound design, with it starting off silent but slowly growing in it's tenseness and oppressiveness as you collect each page, until the ambient music reaches a point where it feels like without you even having to look to know Slenderman is right on your tail, relentlessly chasing you. If you take that sound away, the game will instantly lose practically all of it's horror value
