Is multiple universes something that people actually like as a plot point or does it just happen because the storywriters run out of ideas

I like it when it's properly hinted at way before it becomes an issue.
Or if it becomes one right away, it's still a slow pace until it REALLY becomes an issue. As in, space aliens out of nowhere conquering earth is bad, but space aliens showing up, going Ayy Lmao for a while because everyone's confused and only then after the initial clash, actually going conquer mode, then that's fine.
So basically like with every other narrative element. Write it into the setting, don't just fucking bullshit us.

The main character's ability enables him to skip freely between timelines based on his choices, and you uncover parts of the plot on your own. There isn't really any handholding either, the player has to peel the story apart like a space-time onion until the final revelation.
