>>
>>342128927

Success does not = it's good.
If that was true EA would be nothing but good games. They make their money by sort of rubberbanding a game through intense marketing and using dev loyalty. The actual game is made by perpetually cycled in low-experience devs to make it as cheaply as possible and then launch it with so much hype that they make over twice their money back by idiots taking the bait.

This film had quite the stretched rubber band built up by years of hype. Doesn't matter how bad it was, The rubber band was going to release ahead.

If there is a sequel, there will be diminishing return due to how bad this current film is.

Not faithful to the lore, but the structure of Warcraft's storytelling.

Watched it yesterday and I have literally no idea why people hate it. If anything it put me in the mood for warcraft and I've been reading the books and playing the games again.

I would legitimately love to see a sequel.

I'm a huge Warcraft fanboy and as such I enjoyed the movie.

I thought the first half really struggled though, the pacing was really bad and the humans weren't done too well.

From what I've gathered, 40 minutes was cut from the movie, and I imagine most of that content was at the start of the movie, director's cut should be interesting.

I was super worried the movie wouldn't do well. It doesn't seem too friendly to people unfamiliar with the lore. Seeing things like this makes me hopeful for better sequels, maybe get a nice Burning Legion intro?

Have some Kargath in the meantime.

Funny thing is, once film makers realize china is the biggest money maker, the movie industry will start to pander their tastes instead of murricans. Video games will follow and in 50 years, china is the globally spoken language instead of english.

First I wouldn't stick it too hard to Duncan Jones. The reason Sam Raimi left the project years earlier is because he spent time writing a supposedly good script only to have the Metzen and friends scrap it and write their own for him.

This means that the C-devs intended to have their scripts and their creative control no matter who was directing. Duncan might as well hadn't been there, but blizzard obviously doesn't know how to direct a set so they needed him.

WoW has a huge fandom that will eat whatever is on their plate, back when I was playing WoW I knew people on the lore forums who would eat up whatever blizzard shat on their plate in terms of story, with most placing their tipping point on a specific thing like their racial lore. Warcraft simply has a massive, tolerant community that will go through mental gymnastics to preserve the time waster they've put on their life. Even people who have long since abandoned the game and blizzard probably went to see the film hoping for some nostalgia.
>>
>>342135436
I said low estimate, and at least a double for marketing. Most likely it actually cost over 200M$ to make it and over 200M$ for marketing, so 370M$ is no where near what they wanted for this its not even close to acceptable which would be around 500M$.

For a movie this size all studios want it to do over 1B$ or close to it, like 800M$, that's what they think when they think whether they'll give it a greenlight or no.

Uwe Boll chooses a videogame to make a movie about, ignores everything about the game other than it's most basic concepts and then fills it with bad acting and a nonsense plot.

The joke is that he'd be an ok director if he actually tried, but he uses a loophole in german tax law or something to make revenue from films regardless if they're bad.

As proof, watch his film Rampage it's pretty good.

It probably follows the lore about 50%. Only a couple of the retcons are actually dumb IMO.

You can tell a lot of content was cut, there's a good movie in there, but it stumbles a lot. Still better than I expected, the special effects were top notch, as was the sound.

Critics are just giddy to shit all over it. If you're a fan of Warcraft lore, you may like it, unless you're a purist that tantrums over any adaptations made.

>/mlp/ and /co/
>/mlp/ general gets too autistic and the mods take emergencey measures
>4chans resident autists form a hissy fit and decide to plan IRC raids against all boards
>Their numbers increase rapidly and the shitposting becomes unmanageable by the mods.
>moot makes /mlp/ as an emergency measure.

One was made because it was necessary, it was a site threatening phenomenon.

/vp/ was made because /v/ will latch on to any excuse to attack something because "everything is shit and I want you to suffer" to the point where merely a day of seeing a thread of the same topic makes them enraged.

It's just as bad as /a/ where they forced /m/ into existence because Gundam wasn't mindless weeb cutsey shit and actually good anime, but in that case the /m/ community is objectively superior.
>>
>>342134008
Movie reviews are just circlejerking about Warcraft. They thought they had something safe to haughtily piss on and then china bitchslapped them.
>>
>>342138148

A movie's success can have little to do with how good it is.

Typically films that are really good are sleeper hits that form cult followings after people who look into it discover that it's really good and share it over time, where as it failed on initial release for not pandering enough to "everyone" (I.E 2001 a space odyssey, passed off as boring on release).

Bad films can be successful based on marketing and lowest common denominator pandering. A lot of the market just wants to stare at mindless action and the films are backed by the kind of investors that try to appeal to everyone. This mentality always leads to bad decisions that make a film shitty but more appealing in the trailers. The money from these investors also makes marketing easier and more marketing can lead to more people going to see it.

Finally, things like hype (such as warcraft) and star power can lead to success.

This is how Adam Sandler films succeed, by getting a lot of stars.

Because it was one of the first major 3D movies? It literally rode on a gimmick and the fact that Cameron hadn't done a movie since Titanic. Objectively speaking it wasn't as good as the reviews and revenue would make you think, but normies just ate it all up.

Of the movie itself? it's pretty bad. You could probably salvage a decent movie out of it if you fixed early pacing, which is also where the humans get the most screentime. One movie for each perspective would have been nice, but obviously there are other problems that would rise up from having to make two movies.

The actual story very loosely follows Warcraft 1, but it screws up a lot of details, either to make characters more sympathetic, so they could insert modern WoW writing, or because Blizzard has extremely limited foresight in where they're going with sequels. Also so they could make Thrall a green moses, which was one of the dumbest fucking bits in the movie.

A couple of the action scenes were alright, mostly because they featured all plot important characters that were doing anything of interest at the time. The scene switching was pretty fucking awful though, like they were incapable of focusing on one thing for any length of time unless they had to.

I think they only thing really got right was the overall Orc design, and a few visual references here and there. Which I'm pretty sure is where most of the 'I liked the movie!' shit comes from, people lapping up the WC locations and shit like a Murloc in the early parts that watches characters cross a bridge. Little things that would be a lot cooler if the movie didn't deviate so much and wasn't in a hurry to get to the ending.

Honestly, I liked it.

Cinematically, it was kinda bad. No pacing, and the story was frantically pushed to move as quick as possible to drop battle scenes on us. But over all good CG and decent shots.

Theatrically, the acting for the humans was awful. They felt stale and overacted most of their scenes. Orc actors was better because it was CG.

Plotwise, it got a minor set of things wrong. But so minor and inconsequential I can accept the retcons. I wanna see WC2 and 3 done. But I hope they get closer to the original lore.

It was very unfriendly to people who don't know a damn about Warcraft.

Because while it was cinematically bad, the scenes it was building towards were executed perfectly. Overall bad, but good where it counts.

Theatrically, I have no defense for this. Seriously.

Plotwise, it's a good and faithful retelling. It isn't bad, the things got wrong were mostly written out or inconsequential anyways.

Though it is still only amazing for people who enjoy warcraft, it's a good movie besides.
Better than most of the crap that hits the silver screen. And better than most video game adaptations.
