to be honest "indie game" is kind of a vague term. Wayforward has been around since the Gameboy days and has made like a million movie/cartoon tie-in game but Shantae 4 is still widely considered to be an indie game.

Indie does not mean small or underground. Shantae 4 doesn't have a publisher and Wayforward is not a publisher. That is what indie, independent means.

Good question. Some might say that devs that would have once been making freeware games are now trying to sell them on Steam Greenlight. However, there are still people making freeware games; they just don't get any attention (for whatever reason). All the old sites/news outlets/blogs used to put freeware titles fairly prominently, yet either these sites or gone, or they don't do this anymore. I wonder why this is the case - as people in general really like free shit.
Maybe the concept of "freeware" got warped by the concept of mobile/PC "free to play." Perhaps people are somewhat wary of free games, as they are used to the f2p nonsense. I don't know, though - it's just a guess. There is definitely bona fide freeware with good devs out there.
