Serious talk: is vr a meme or is it gonna catch on and become the norm?

I'm just wondering, because i don't wanna have to play games like this ever

Gimmicks. This generation's motion control
>>
I got the Samsung Gear VR with my new phone.

What a bullshit device and software that went along with it.
>>
>>342117696
It probably won't replace everything, but it will likely become popular once both the headset and the specs needed become affordable.
>>
Ok

In what way is VR different(not better) from when it was introduced last? What can it do now that it couldn't then?
>>
>>342117696
It's a gimmick but it has potential to be used regularly in the future when it becomes much more affordable and efficient.

VR is pretty cool , the big problem is the lack of games and the expensive hardware.

When hardware gets cheaper more and more devs will make games for it, and by that time most current games will be ported to VR
>>
>>342117696
It's a meme.

Thought Vive would do more with room tracking, but it ended up being standstill wii-tier garbage.

I'm sure there will be something cool in the future, but now is not the time.
>>
>>342117696
It's a dank maymay.

>is vr a meme
no
>is it gonna catch on and become the norm?
no.

It's going to be one of those cool things people have, mandatory for any sim gaming and great fun for parties. But it'll coexist with regular 2D games and many genres are still better with a flat monitor.
>>
>>342117696
It has a way to go. I see the legitimate potential in it though and it can be really immersive to the point that you forget that you're wearing a fat ass headset around your head.

Right now it's missing a game or program that utilizes its potential and everything feels like demos.

Do I see it as the future of gaming? No. But I think it's got a better future than motion control ever could have.

>>342118371
You have to admit that they're starting to get places, sure, the progress isn't ideal yet, but there IS progress.

In 10 years this technology could be something significant.
>>
>>342118291
Thanks to smart phones we now have small as fuck 4k screens so the resolution is better than before. Also gaming is huge and every gamer has a powerful GPU.
>>
>>342117696
It won't become the norm. It is gimmicky and shit.
>>
>>342117696
Ask me again once people like me stop getting motion sick from it. Before you say anything, I tried the vive
>>
>>342118512
It's cool with games like Tabletop simulator. If somewhere down the line they can nail first person shooters and proper movement it could be immersive as fuck.
>>
>>342117696
Literally a shitty 3d tv strapped to the face. Wait for actual 4d light field displays where you can focus your eyes on things without having a nausea.
>>
It depends on whether there will be games that would push it forwards. The technology is amazing and the feeling of immersion is great, but so far we only have demos and optional ability to play few games with it. But the games need to be designed specifically and only for VR and they need to be proper games, with long campaigns or lots of replayability.
>>
>>342118725
Then you tried the wrong demos or played with a shitty computer that can't keep up with the framerate. Most of Vive games are designed that you stand still and the game world doesn't move, and it's impossible to get motion sickness from that
>>
"VR" in some form (be it more developed headsets or some future technology like brain-computer interfaces, holodecks or something else) will definitely replace monitors in gaming and many other tasks.

It's not ready for widespread adoption right now, however.
>>
I'm interested in VR for racing games or flight/space sims.
>>
>>342117696

ive had the vive pre for several months now

it never stops being special

BUT it is like scuba diving. it is really fucking neat but it takes a lot of effort and you dont want to be doing it all day.

arcades are going to take off again
>>
cool for some games but honestly I detest the thought of a game supporting traditional play alongside VR

Gotta optimize those controls and graphics for one thing and one thing only or you'll be mired in development hell I'd be willing to wager.

As it is now? Completely meme.

Until the graphics are up to par with 1080p and the controls are responsive and game developers make decent games, it will always be a meme
>>
>>342118615
>better graphics
That's why I wrote 'different', not 'better'.

In order to succeed, VR need to bring something you can't get on a setup that already exists. It's always been the immersion thing, but then you're admitting you can't immerse into the games you're already playing? Really?

Watching the youtubers don the helmets and playing amnesia, do they really seem more scared than when they're playing on a screen? Really?

Your mind is already filtering out the rest of the world when you're looking at the screen; your brain isn't telling you half the shit you're seeing even if you're looking straight at it, but now you're telling me you need a full helmet to trick it? come on.
>>
>>342117696

Never the norm but it will stick around for porn and driving/flying games
>>
There's no way it will become the norm. It might become a separate way to play video games, but it won't substitute traditional way of playing games.

It's like saying that movies replace theater.
