No she wasn't. Somewhere in the range of 1000 years ago, Nahiri, who is trapped in stasis to guard against the Eldrazi, sent out a "possible eldrazi release" sos signal to Ugin and Sorin. When neither of them responded she wound up dealing with it herself. after that she goes to Innistrad to figure out why Sorin (who she considers a friend) didn't come to help her, and Sorin kind of acts like a dick. Nahiri figures the only way Sorin's going to listen to her is if she shows him that she's as strong as he is and makes him respect her, but Sorin (who had just created Avacyn) is weak and worried she's just going to kill him. So Avacyn throws her in the Helvault, where she sits for a thousand years. In that time the Eldrazi get released and Zendikar gets fucked. Nahiri goes back to Zendikar when the Helvault breaks and sees that Ulamog's out and the plane itself is just fucked, and returns to Innistrad to punish the plane for Sorin's mistake.

It's the same fucking game with really minor changes.
You roam a linear world with shortcuts to go from boss to boss. To do so, you go to a bonfire/lantern that heals you but revives ennemies. It also allows you to level up by using souls/blood echoes and upgrade your weapon with chunks etc. You can teleport between any of those to see npcs who have a small quest to get some lore item, because the story is told through hidden text and dialogues.
The controls let you roll, do sidesteps, hit quickly, hit hard, pary, and combine these in a slightly different way depending of the weapon you chose.
It's the same game with a different setting, deal with it. You guys shit on series like AssCreed and CoD for always being the same every year, but SoulsBorne aren't much better, they just cater to a smaller audience because of their difficulty so you don't have to shit on it to feel unique

Take off your rose tinted glasses and go back to play Demons Soul's after playing the other games. Game is objectively the slowest and clunkiest in the series with the least enemy & environment variation. There's only 5 different looking areas in the entire game. Souls hit that mark by the fucking depths. Also the hub world is the laziest world design they've ever done. They didn't even bother trying to connect the overworld together like in later games. Instead you get 5 linear zones (that don't ever cross) to progress through at your own will.
