How to do assets if you're shit at art?

Easy, draw the game in really shitty ms-paint/pixel art and make the characters look horrifyingly stupid, then make the dialog a bit quirky and pretend like you're making the game "ironically shitty" or "subversively bad" or whatever the post-ironic meme kids call it these days, like that guy who does simpsons art. Guaranteed buys from Steam babies who saw their favorite Youtuber playing le ebin maymay game.

Or just, you know, practice your art and get good. This is the respectable option, but the first option will probably actually make you more money.

I'm really starting to get somewhere.
Got horizontal and vertical knockbacks ironed out this webm shows both at the same time, but they can be applied independently, made an ability to repeat spell casts without any further action from the player, and got a whole slew of other buffs, debuffs and functions done

Besides just jumping and eventually double jumping/hovering, those won't be too hard to implement, players and monsters can get around using their spells. In this webm the basic attack spell has been modified to launch its caster towards the point they target and repeat 3 times after casting, turning it into more of a mobility spell instead

Make your game concept using placeholder assets, squares and rectangles. Get it to the point that the gameplay is what you want, then get building the whole game.

Once you're close to completion (it's playable beginning to end in placeholder form) pitch it to some artfags, look at their portfolios and once you decide on someone, get them to sign a contract (do NOT pay them before they finish their job) detailing the timeframe you want it done in, any deductions if they don't finish it before your deadline and any legal action you may take if they abandon the project.

Same goes for music, there's plenty of amateur composers out there and you probably aren't going to need many tracks, so that should be easy to sort out. SFX can be royalty-free or bought online, if you don't want to do the Foley yourself. Audio is literally the least important component and you shouldn't worry about it until you've gotten your art sorted.

Planning on going tower defense with rpg and land control elements. You are ghosty things and have to plant your towers to feed off these npcs as your resource. Enemies spawn from their bases and hunt down your towers, feeding too fast or killing npcs causes them to spawn faster and target your character specifically (you are the boss they need to end).

But all the enemies' lineart and some portraits and big sprites were commissioned.

Depending on the KS's success, I'll replace more and more graphics in order from most important to least.

Yes. Make gameplay concepts until making them is second nature in whatever program you're using and you perfect making one you really love. Then draw up a story, a plan for the game's content, a potential dev timeline and then team up with an artfag to help you out with assets.
If you make a few levels or some short content, release it as a demo/alpha and send it to reviewers/bloggers/e-celebs to get attention and accept donations on your game dev blog/website. If it gets enough attention and you truly believe you can finish the game, stick it on indiegogo or kickstarter to fund the artist and your own living costs for the length of the development.

I am trying to work out the aspects of it such as how the battle scenes will work/appear, the world view (e.g. top down, side, etc.) and a non shit story that can be easily done with only 1 major character, all this BEFORE I spend months upon months learning an engine only to learn that the engine is awful for the game I wish to make.

Add RPG progression to your endless runner.

Yeah everything is hand drawn besides the 3D stuff, which are big enemies like bosses and the maps themselves.

My friend draws the character concepts and I make the sprites/animations, but everything is placeholder and we will redraw everything later with a better art style.

I considered making the sprites just a bunch of overlayered sprites like TTYD since it's easier to animate, but we thought that handdrawn would look better. The issue is hand drawn is a lot of work and you sometimes have to redo animations many times to get them right.

Onion skin is helpful when making handdrawn animations.

Onion skin is using transparent frames to base the next on, like the traditional method of animation. Look up, there are many tutorials for it.

Also bee will probably stay as she is, but we are thinking into changing moth as some frames look really off model when unfolding the wings. We have no idea how to change moth tho.

I'd say it would work with the one on the right with a few tweaks. Moth is good for a wizard, but these are typical traits that would go well with them and can be used in a moth's design

Yeah, I tried changing a few things in the current design (like head size and height) but I feel it's somewhat plain compared to bee and beetle (beetle has been changed already from an old design in pic because of trouble animating it)

The main cast was based on the 3 main classes of RPG, Thief (bee), warrior (beetle) and mage (moth), so I can't change moth's motiff since part of the plot and battle skills are built around that.

I don't want to make moth too tall as the other party members are shorter. Moth is the tallest, and even it is shorter than most NPCs.

I will try messing with the design some more.

I already have a base of C knowledge from programming uni, but I learned C# by watching tutorials on youtube on how to make platformers.

After that it's only practice, I already made many short games before that never went anywhere, but it gave me programming knowledge as I tried new things.

Literally google "how to do x in unity/C#" when you get stuck, and look around. Don't be frustated if the first result isn't the answer, and never copy paste code directly. Try to read it and understand what each parts do, and eventually you will learn. It isn't a fast thing either, and you only learn by practicing.

It should take about a week to understand how code works if you pay attention, and about a month or more to start making your own stuff without copying directly.

An editor isn't that difficult since you're just storing configuration information and then loading the corresponding environment when you go into the play mode.

Designing UI is a pain. Also I can't decide if I want the game to look more like Killer7/EX Troopers or Persona 5. I should also decide on the game's setting and theme to help me better design the environments and characters. Still I'd be approaching the development all backwards. I ought to make a prototype first but I don't know much anything about coding. I have Playmaker installed too yet I've no idea how to use it to make the things I need. Like a Legend of Grimrock style character controller.
