according to post e3 dev interviews the exploration opens up and combat is much more like classic gow after the tutorial section. They also said cinematics take a backseat the majority of the time.

In that clip, Kratos went fucking ham on that troll's leg, just as fast as he goes ham on other shit in the past GoWs. No, he doesn't have the chainblades. Yes, the attack speed was still comparable to other, non-chainblade weapons like the cestus.

i really like the new approach. the old god of war format was getting stale imo. there was not a lot more they could do in terms of scale and set pieces after 3 and ascension.

God of War was dead. Nobody liked Ascension, everybody was sick of the gameplay loop, everyone hated how Kratos acted. God of War was the butt of all shitty action game with garbage story jokes. It's time was over and if the game showed up and it was in ancient Greece again, if Kratos was angry again, if it had the same static-camera chainblade swinging action again every single thread on /v/ would be slamming it for being an awful generic rehash with the same gameplay as every game in the series, a boring one-note unlikable protagonist without a shred of originality or creativity. It would mirror the Infinite Warfare trailer in dislikes with how people are so sick of God of War, that this was the defining statement to how stale Sony is for making another shitty God of War that no-one wanted.
There was no more remaining value in the God of War brand, but at the same time making a generic action game about a different mythology under a different name would be equally as boring. I bet none of you fuckers even played Viking: Battle of Asgard. So instead they:

You don't have to do the animation, you can kill every enemy with just normal attacks.
When you kill an enemy with a QTE execution, you get more health orbs or magic orbs but less XP orbs, whereas when you kill them with normal attacks you get more XP orbs but no health or magic. It's classic risk vs reward, if you don't do the QTE finisher then if you're low on health the enemy is going to fight back as you try to finish them of, but you'll get more experience to unlock more combos and abilities. If you use the QTE, you'll have an easier time finishing them, but you might screw yourself out of unlocking all of your moves if you do it too often.

But I'll give this new one a shot. I'm not immediately going to shoot it down because it's not the exact same thing. I'm just not sure how turning a beat-em up into survival horror is going to work out.
Also, I never had a problem with Kratos acting angry and murderous. I only had a problem when the game makers still tried to pretend that he was some kind of anti-hero and not just a straight up villain.

It mainly pissed me off that there was only like one animation for every enemy type and they take so fucking long. That XBLA game Bloodforge did it way better by just making finisher moves be really fast.

The franchise died at 3, since then all they've done is pump out meaningless prequels because they had nowhere else to go with the story. Now they're gunna ride the wave of emotionally stimulating story about father and son bonding that would have previously been shunned as a god of war hame.

yeah, nah, you can shorten the animations in the later games. I like turn based RPGs, I expect and want slow animations in that. I don't want repetitive slow animations in a fast paced action game to wreck the pacing. Then again, I mostly played Ninja Gaiden over the GoW series, and that was also exactly what I wanted. Very fast finishers that have different animations.

Kratos was always a dad. The whole series is based upon the fact that he killed his wife and daugther. This is nothing new, people complaining about that aspect obviously didn't play the other games. Even god of war III had you escorting a little girl, pandora. Also, we haven't seen enough of the game to determine if it'll actually play out like the opening scene is shown to be.
