Last holloween I tried playing through Spookies House of Jumpscares and the little cardboard cutouts scared the shit out of me. The actually big deal ghosts were super lame, up until they combined the two. When that baby skeleton popped up during the ghost chase I had to uninstall the game forever.

In this day and age jumpscares are a necessity to make the experience exciting. If the entire game was just tension building the player would catch on and all tension would be lost. There needs to be somewhere for the tension to go and sometimes that means having something scream at you at the perfect moment.
Then there are games like FNaF where nothing but jumpscares eventually dulls the player to any sense of threat.

I got desensitized to the jumpscares early.
Maybe they were a little more atmospheric if you didn't see them as often.

I actually think FNAF is a brilliant horror game because of how it treats the jumpscares. Jumpscares aren't something that you go through by default because that's what you're supposed to experience, they're a failstate that happens if you fuck up, but if you know the rules and pay attention, then you can go through the game without a single jumpscare. That in itself makes the game more tense and heightens the jumpscare itself.
It's pretty brilliant and it's a shame that the fag that made the game started reiterating on them non-stop for the sake of jewing out.
