At the very least they know what mistakes not to make in terms of marketing. I'd be shocked if the NX ended up being as big of a disappointment as the Wii U.
That being said it's quickly becoming obvious the NX will be very similar to the Wii U in terms of hardware. Which is definitely a disappointment, though not a death sentence. The Wii U had some great games despite being pretty weak. Though the lack of power does suggest there will be some form of gimmick to go along with it, which is always discouraging. They have the games, they don't need gimmicks.

And at this point any console pushing specs is getting too close to just being a locked down PC unless they take a massive loss to also keep cost down. I mean unless you really need a God of War/Bloodbourne fix or like Halo/Destiny there really is much need to shell out 400 bucks on those consoles when you'll spend less on a good PC over shit PC/console.
Wii U filled a nice little gap of being pretty in design and not shooting for hyper real on hardware that can't pull it off without being a slideshow or cheating out the lightning and shadows. And kept a console price point.
If NX does the same all it has to do is end up with enough games to justify buying it, which usually happens for Nintendo eventually. Plus bitches be crazy for Mario Kart and Zelda.

The PS1 had only its CD format that made storage of huge games affordable. By itself the PS1 can't make true 3D and is only simulating one. That's pretyy much why Crash Bandicoot was a 2,5 D game with a fixed camera.
Also the GC was much stronger than the PS2, but as it didn't have a DVD reader, it failed.
