It was basically the showcase demo for the silent cartographer, except with a different UI, some switched around enemies and the plasma pistol and plasma rifle were reversed, the rifle was single fire and overcharge, and the pistol was full auto

Botched release, rushed development. The game was actually pretty fun to play once you got into it and you could see it could've been big if it had a couple more time to be made.
I have over 50 hours in Brink, the problems it had were:

>Confusing Abilities
>No Single player
This is a big one for me atleast. They hyped up the story and the world built for BRINK (which is admittedly cool) and didn't make a single player around it. It was just bots on multiplayer maps, and the bots were dumb as fuck. The game had a lot of good stuff going for it, and I think it's one of the first to do somethings like
>All team gameplay, no KDR or Lone wolf encouraging stuff (Overwatch now does this, in BRINK there was no KDR and you had to play like a team to win)

BRINK would've succeeded if it was released as a F2P game, or had more time to be developed and maybe a lower price of ~40 dollars. I really enjoyed it for the time and the parkour system was a great idea. I blame Bethesda for rushing it out the door, the game didn't even work well on AMD cards. Bethesda didn't care.

The game didn't work well on AMD cards because it's id tech 5 which is opengl and AMD didn't have a compliant OpenGL implementation in their drivers at the time.

This is 100% unmistakably inarguably an AMD issue, and it's the type of thing people reference when they tell you not to buy fucking AMD garbage.

They ruined the launch of rage with that shit.

AMD was working on a driver path with both id and EA for battlefield 3 seperately. They were gameworksing the driver basically, adding optimizations specific to those games. The idea was that they would combine the code from the BF driver and the Rage driver when they released the driver.

Right before Rage released AMD just released the fucking BF version of the driver. They never integrated the rage support. Because their driver does not have compliant opengl, amd cards choked in the game. I have youtube videos that I shut people the fuck up with here, that showed the game running flawlessly maxed out on a fucking 4 year old nvidia card on launch day.

Shit pisses me off. Everyone pissed on id software like it was their fault, never bothered to learn the story or understand it, and now the same people are stroking their dick over fake 480 benchmarks in 10 threads a day here.

I haven't played Crysis but every other modern game has game props that are either static or feel weightless. In HL2 cinder blocks felt like cinder blocks, tires felt like tires, and so forth. Hell I remember in early versions of Garry's Mod the the physgun used to tell you the weight of the object you're lifting in the console. Also, name a game with better ragdoll physics. I remember id Tech 4 having really janky ragdolls though, which is why they always faded away in Doom 3 and Quake 4.

most maps had around six objectives that you had to do IN ORDER to win as attackers, and it was rare online to even get past the first one, and there were almost never any flanking routes to take.
even if you DID manage to get to the objective, you had to be the right class (out of four classes) and then you had to just stand there holding action hoping to fucking christ that an enemy didn't just come and blow you away, making you have to start all over again.
didn't even take a week for people to realise that defenders won 95% of the time and the game fucking died.

I concede to that one as I had forgotten about R*'s ragdoll engine. I was thinking more current gen. IV's ragdoll system was the shit but shame they toned it down in V. Pushing civilians until they ragdoll onto train tracks was my shit. Hell I liked how RPG rounds would deflect off sloped surfaces. IV was more TECHNOLOGY than V.

the reason it changed is, if you understand how hard the fucking engine is working to render the world of v, it will make you sick to your stomach out of awe. They had to sacrifice pyhsics stuff that mostly goes unnoticed for graphics stuff that's shown nearly 100% of the time.

GTAV's engine is the most technically impressive engine ever. Doing what it does on PS3/360 should be considered practically impossible. It's what you get when you throw money, talent, and care at something. We rarely see that in games.

I don't know what games you're playing if you can't think of any with dismemberment. Postal 2 (mostly for its expansion), Soldier of Fortune (2 at least, not sure about 1), more recently Dishonored (and 2 which is coming out soon), Serious Sam 3 had gibbing (though not humans, Half Life did though), GTA3 had at least one dismemberment animation, Fable, etc.

I think it's just not done that often anymore because it's a bit more complicated than just doing ragdolls and really isn't very realistic the majority of the time it happens in video games as usually you don't have as much force as would be needed irl to dismember someone.

I was a kid back when it came out, and it's the one and only weird vidya boner I ever got.
I was playing with gore disabled until one day I decided to switch it on, and sweet mother of jesus, dismemberment and death screeches in the game felt so nasty and real at the time I popped a raging fucking boner (not figuratively -- literally) while simultaneously feeling utmost disgust. I fell into a sort of catatonia for the rest of the day afterwards.

And as for SoF1, it does have dismemberment as well.

They didnt have loot system, carmack spend too damn much time fucking around megatextures, fucking around apple machines, fucking around console 60fps with idt5, fucking around instead of making the game right.

I have hopes for this game, luckily i dropped before it even released.

To make the game bigger and look better - they obviously had to significantly cut back at the things running "under the hood" and consuming tons of processing power - stuffs like Ped. AI routines(hilariously simplified compared to IV) and extent of Euphoria physics simulation.

By the time the next gen/PC ports came, they couldn't be bothered to rewrite a significant part of the engine, because unlike res./shaders/AA - it ain't a simple toggle.

I remember when there was a push for AI, exactly around the time of MGS2's release. Soldiers that worked as a team, stronger together and situationally aware. Successfully escaping a "Clearing" situation is still one of the best feelings in the game.

Then developers realised that you fucking dullards will play any game with bullet sponge enemies as long as "muh graphix". Even Kojima back-pedalled from advancing soldier AI as it gradually declined back to the 1 v 1/bum rush flanking we see in TPP
